Motherboard - Graka Issue

    Hello,

    Recently i changed my rig and with the old components i made a second rig.
    Specs:
    Intel q9550
    asus P5Q-E
    AMD ATI 4570
    PSU 450W

    I new the PSU was a little lite but the system booted and runned ok.
    Now the PSU crashed and i got a second hand 650W PSU.
    But now when i try to boot up i have 1 long and 3 short beeps. Then a pause and a short beep again. And black screen.
    The manual says that the VGA is not detected according to the beeps.
    I tried taking it out and replacing it with another VGA but this doesn't changes.
    Also placing the cards in the seconde slot (sli/crossfire) doens't seems to make any effect.

    But weirdly enough, i fergot to take my spare graka (a lite card, no extra power needed) out of the second slot and rebooted with 2 cards.
    The POST takes a while but eventualy the computer boots up... using the card that doesn't get detected(the ati 4570 that still is in the first slot)...

    I get to windows without any errors...

    I tried resetting the mobo and rebooting with only the ati card but then there are the beeps again...

    OK maybe it's me but what is a graka? I am guessing it is a graphics card of some kind. (GPU?)

    Assuming from your specs that I am right and a graka is a GPU. I am not sure if you have tried everything. You mentioned that you have one card that does not require any upgrade of your PSU. Have you tried that card alone?

    You are right about the beep code for that motherboard.

    Yes indeed, graka is the GPU.
    Yes i have tried that card alone. And stil i get the beebs.
    I made a mistake, the GPU is a 4870 not a 4570. (not that this makes a difference)
    The weird thing is that the pc doens't boots with one card. But with 2 it does...

    Hello logaNn and Welcome to Computer Help Forums.

    The ATI Radeon 4870 looks like it requires two 6-pin PCI-E power connectors. (500 watt or larger PSU) Do you have
    both of them connected properly to your power supply?

    Yes, with the former PSU i had to use an adapter on a simple molex.
    But with the 650W PSU from XFX i have 3 PCI-E connectors. They are connected.
    The computer is up and running as we speak. But only because there are 2 grapic cards inserted.
    If i take one out than i get the beeping again that says No VGA DETECTED.

    I find this strange. I always used one card on this board. And now it requires 2 card just to boot....

    its like it requires 2cards. when i take one out, regardless of witch one it says that the VGA is NOT detected

    Are you certain that the used PSU is working correctly? Do you have a multimeter that you can
    use to check the voltage and current on the power supply?

    Well, the computer is running. its even running a game. That would not be possible if the PSU is faulty, is it?
    It requires a second card on the motherboard in de second PCI-E slot to boot. That is my actual problem.
    Because is slows down the POST and booting of the computer. And also it is kinda weird.

    I know very little about crossfire other than that it has to be enabled in the bios. I have asked someone more expert than I but in the meantime is there anything in the bios that has been changed so as to require there be 2 cards?

    well it isn't placed in cross fire. Its just 2 independent cards on the same motherboard. Its the only way te boot. I found this by accident.
    The former PSU 450W crashed this week. The only change i made was to change the PSU. I looked in the BIOS but could not find anyting that says the system needs to cards to boot.

    Though this might sound strange considering it will boot with both cards in, I am a little worried that when the PSU failed, it might just have done a small amount of damage to some components on the motherboard. I have known PSU's to fail and totally wipe out the motherboard at the same time. It happened to me did that.

    The only way to find out for sure though would be a complete change of motherboard.

    Just another question since this does seem like a bit of an odd issue. When the computer boots, no matter how slowly, how many cards are showing in your device manager?

    just my ATI card. But it could be the motherboard. I am already looking for a replacement.

    no, not even close.
    One ATI 4870 (used to be gaming card)
    one card i retrieved from a pc a friend gave me. I think its a intel grapics card or something.
