Just read on the BBC's News site that Microsoft are close to releasing there own free AV software called Morro,

Microsoft plan to replace their Onecare product with this, apparently it's not going to have the family protection utilities but be more of an anti malware suite.

This to me sounds interesting with the average AV suite costing around £40, however I have doubts if its going to be as good as already available free software such as Avast.

Still an interesting development on the Malware front, will have to keep an eye out for more news on the subject and keep you all posted.

this shows that they are not very confident in their Windows Defender which is now found on all systems as XP has gone outta production.

Windows Defender is meant to their in house anti malware protection which gets regular updates from Microsoft at the start of each month.

I don't think it will do well. I know only a few people who liked OneCare.

Although the argument that might stand is that the makers of the OS should know how to protect it best.. I emphasize the Should :p

I will use proven AntiVirus programs, and wouldn't trust M$ to look after my AntiVirus needs.
Windows Defender which I did have, never caught anything in 18 mths.
One Care, I didn't find that good either.

I used Onecare for a while. I liked it and since MS made it I liked the fact it was easy on resources.

I can fully understand the the dislike for Microsoft on a corporate level but I am not sure why there is so much distrust on technical matters. Do people actually believe that they are deliberately trying to create an inferior product? My natural instinct is to give credence to the attempts by the creator of the OS to find and sort out the bugs.

I am of the opinion that M$ have a tendency to release products prematurely,on occassions to beat a competitors release date.
    I think often Dollar driven.
These bugs should be eliminated before the products are released.
    That's my opinion.

that being said I still use Onecare (I am one of the people that like it :D)
