Microsoft’s Windows Store has been full of junk apps for years, but a new problem has emerged with apps providing access to pirated movies and TV shows. Torrent Freak reports that some apps run across PCs, mobile, and even Xbox One, and provide quick access to movies that aren’t even on legal streaming platforms. There’s also a range of pirated music apps that stream songs and albums.

A number of apps, including “Free Movies Online” and “HD Movies Online 2019” are promoted in Microsoft’s trending apps section of the Windows Store, making it easy for anyone to discover them. While other app stores like Google’s Play Store also suffer from similar issues, the sheer number in Microsoft’s Windows Store show that the company’s approval process is clearly broken. The Verge was able to download a variety of apps that provided access to pirated movies and TV shows.

Microsoft has tried to improve its Windows Store several times over the years, and the company’s latest effort is focused on getting desktop apps into the store. Microsoft’s problem is that it lacks a wide range of apps, so these illegal apps are easily gamed into trending lists before they’re removed. Microsoft was forced to ban game emulator apps in the Windows Store earlier this year, after a clampdown on pirated content. We’ve reached out to Microsoft for comment on its Windows Store, and we’ll update you accordingly.

I've assumed up to now that such apps wouldn't let people freely view or download copyrighted material. It looks like I've been wrong. I haven't felt the need to try downloading films over the Internet. There's always plenty to watch on TV.

I have used the Windows Store though. I like to play 'Hidden Object' games on the computer and the Windows Store has a good number of them. They may list as 'Free' or have 'In app purchases' but the price is normally less than £3.00, which is pretty good for that type of game.

I used to play Hidden Object games with the grandchildren but they have all grown up and are not so interested. I now have to admit that I play them just for my own enjoyment. :)

I was a bit wary of buying these games from the Store but they seem to be quite OK. When it says 'Free' and then 'Offers in-app purchases', all it seems to mean is that you can play part of the game for free and then payment is needed to go any further. I'm OK with that and as said, the HO games are usually less expensive from the Store than elsewhere.

Super graphics in some of them isn't there?

Awesome graphics in most of them.
I am always surprised at how many objects the younger grandkids find.
Oftentimes they are better at it than the older kids.

    I LOVE hidden object puzzles.
I buy hidden object games from Big Fish. Once a month they have a 65% off sale so a $9.99 game is $3.49. (Yup, I'm cheap :p ) I like to play on the computer and not on a smaller screen.
I have all in the DreamDay series (3 I actually got through BestBuy as a cheap bundle) and 1 I bought as a CD reduced in a surplus store.
The first Murder She Wrote is good. There are actually 5 mysteries in this one game. I tried the 2nd Murder She Wrote game but it was a lot different from the first series. I don't like having to randomly click and guessing what to do next. That's too nerve racking for me.

I have a few Mystery PI and two MysteryCaseFiles. The one I like, Prime Suspect but the other, Huntsville, I can't get past level 4, I think. I keep running out of time.

I have 2 Little Shop: Treasures and Roadtrip and 2 Big City Adventure: Sydney and San Francisco.

I have a running list of games I want to try. BigFish lets you try for 60 minutes. By then i can usually tell if I'll like the game. (I erred when I bought Huntsville but 1 out of all the games isn't bad).

Perhaps you want to have a look?

I had several Big Fish hidden object games on this computer when it was still running Windows 7.
Unfortunately, they weren't compatible with Windows 10 when I upgraded.
I transferred them over to another computer.

I have a Big Fish account and have bought a good number of HO games from them, all there for re-installation if I want them. I haven't looked at their games and prices recently though. I've mostly bought from the Windows Store. I'll take another look at Big Fish soon.

Another use for the games: Since the scenes are so detailed, some of them can make good jig-saw puzzles. Just a case of screen capturing and pasting them into an editing program for cropping, resizing and any other processing that might be necessary (colour, brightness etc.).

I have used a jig-saw program called BrainsBreaker for a number of years. It seems one of the better ones to me but I know there are other good ones too.
