In 1913 it was legal to mail children. With stamps attached to their clothing, children rode trains to their destinations, accompanied by letter carriers. One newspaper reported it cost fifty-three cents for parents to mail their daughter to her grandparents for a family visit. As news stories and photos popped up around the country, it didn't take long to get a law on the books making it illegal to send children through the mail.

    With thanks to Thomas Doty.

LOL.I really did laugh but I feel guilty laughing. My how times have changed. No smile on either one of those men's faces. Child in the first pic looks like he is saying "Hey ...I got me some tickets to ride the darn train please for the love of GOD get me outa this here gunny sack!".

The second child looks like he is saying "oh ... uh oh I been bad I think someone trying to get rid of me"

I hope the fate of both kids in the picture turned out well.

Yes, quite so. I love looking at old photos like that it captures something film just cant. I like old Civil War Photos, WWI &II Photos etc. How we did things has DEFINITELY changed. My Father told me about how they would gather around a Radio, then a Black and White TV before I came around =)

Actually quite funny in modern times too, considering the cost of a train ticket, I wonder how much less it would cost to post myself somewhere? :big_ha:

Yeah really. OMG I have distant memories of small rooms filled with people and a huge console TV with a tiny screen in the middle but they are really slim memories.
Anyone who was one of the first to have a TV can remember that.

Lets think about it. It was the original I-Pod right?

Lets call it I-TV. You don't have to just listen to the radio broadcast now you can see the moving pictures of the characters speaking! But pictures .. well that capture moments that can only be split seconds of beauty (or not). Pictures seem to captivate us with raw human emotion before film will denigrate it's beauty. In that split second of the photo we all know and love was instant realness.
