    Hi

    A have a Abit KV-85 REV 1.0 Socket 754 + Sempron 1.6GHz
motherboard and bought some RAM for it.

It is compatible with both low and high density RAM.
The problem is it will not boot up with 2x1GB low density RAM
although it will boot up with only 1GB of Low Density RAM in either slot
    so the RAM is good.

Both slots are good as I tried it with 2x1GB of high density RAM
but I need that for another PC.

Is there a bois setting I should change?

    Hope you can help.

Hi soulerdude, welcome to Computer Help Forums. I have friends near you who I'm overdue a visit...You live in a great part of the world...

You said that you booted the computer with only one stick of low density ram, and that you tried both slots...But did you try both sticks in both slots?

Even new ram can be defective.

    Hi Frank
Thanks for the comment, were are actually having the best summer weather in years....at last..lol
Yes I have tried it with both sticks in both slots but it will not boot, the funny thing is each slot is working but only with one stick in.
This is when using High density non ecc.
Also when i use low density there is no problem at all as they are better.
This is why I,m thinking could there be a bios setting needs changed as I only know the basic features in bios as I used to build PC
    allot years ago.

    Any thoughts?

Hi.While you are waiting for Frank, I downloaded your motherboard manual and had a look in the AMI Bios.
I can see no where types of ram or the amount of ram can be altered.
The motherboard chip governs that and you can't alter the chip.
Your motherboard accepts 2gigs of the correct ram.
Whether it be in 1 slot or 2 it doesn't matter.

    In #1 you said
"The problem is it will not boot up with 2x1GB low density RAM
although it will boot up with only 1GB of Low Density RAM in either slot
    so the RAM is good.

In you last post you said
"Also when i use low density there is no problem at all as they are better"

    Could you clarify? Please.

    Hi DSTM

First of thanks for posting and yes I made an error on my first post.

I need to use the high density ram so forget about the low as I need that for another PC.
So I have tried 2 sticks/one in each slot...it will not boot, although it will boot with one stick only in either slot.
So therefore the slots are good and the RAM is good but just cant boot up with 2 sticks.
Also I have about 20 sticks of this high density RAM and they all work.

    PS

I have looked everywere for the manual and if you could send me a copy or give me a link would be great.

    Many thanks again..

    Cheers.

It takes 2GIGS of DDR400/333 Unbuffered ECC/Non-ECC Memory.

    Hi again soulerdude

I've had to have a bit of a read about ram density, obviously due to my own lack of knowledge in this area.

What I've found out will hopefully enlighten us all. And without going into too much detail....

    • High density ram is only compatible with about 10% of motherboards.
    • Low density ram is compatible with all motherboards.
If the above is indeed true then the lesson to be learned here is to stick to Low Density ram.

As I have stated, I have no way of knowing myself how accurate this information is, so if any of the members here can throw a bit more light on this subject, please feel free to educate the rest of us.

On a more positive note, and also something practical that you can do is to download the Crucial scanner from...

    http://www.crucial.com/uk/systemscanner/

The scanner will scan your system and tell you not only what type of ram you have installed, but will also tell you what ram is compatible with your system.

    Your Welcome.:)
Don't forget to follow Frank's advice and run Crucial.

I wasn't aware like Frank about the tech side of High and Low density ram.
I have learnt a lot by your Thread.

True as this is what Im using on the mobo.
I sell them on ebay and had to build a pc so that i could check if the rams were ok before selling them, but i can only check one
stick at a time as the mobo will not boot with 2.
It must be a chip problem but although after reading about ram for about 6 months now this one has stumped me.

The good new is the dudes that sold me te board is sending a full working one free of charge and i can keep this.

I have just had a thought and i think i sould run that CPU-Z program on it and see what it reads...
