I've a bit fed up with Windows 8's high contrast themes. I'd like to change the desktop to a non-busy, non-contrasty image. I can't even set it up for a simple solid color. I did find some themes on-line, but non that I like. What are you using?

It's easy to make your own theme.
I do tend to change mine as the mood suits me.
This is the one I've set on the laptop at the moment:
    Bit predictable, I know.

Normally have the taskbar set to auto hide, but have shown it here so the colour is visible.
Also visible on the notepad document.

Btw: colours may look different to you than they do to me.... as I'm actually colour blind between certain colours.

I hardly use the Start Screen, so don't bother customizing that much.

This is my Win8.1 dual monitor setup.

Just play around with the themes and when you arrive at one that you like... just save it and it'll always be there to choose from.

    Hi Tony,

I didn't think they'd be what you wanted, just trying to give you an idea of what you could make up yourself.

I just use some photos that I have selected and they are set to change every 10 seconds, Tony.

As you know, after you have right clicked on the desktop and clicked on Personalisation you can set the desktop pic.
You can also change the color of your windows borders and taskbar by clicking on the Color button at the bottom.
You can also change the individual sounds by clicking on the Sounds button.

There's an infinite number of possibilities to set your own theme.

I still use Webshots Desktop which has all kinds of Animals, countries, and outer Space and with 3500 professional photographs that change every 15 minutes, I never get bored nor have I ever seen all of them either. It has been unavailable for years but not for me as I saved out my collections and the old installers so it works right!

I out it on every pc I sell or reformat and what amazes me is the number of service calls I get because someone blew away the Webshots store and amazing to me is they will gladly pay my $60 hourly to come out and re up- it for them!

Hey Windows blinds I forgot all about that. Hmm... if they come out with a Win 10 version I would be happy as I hate the look and feel of Win 10.

They are about to release a new version of start - called "Start 10" I believe. I really liked Windows Blinds back in the day long ago. I do believe when they come out with Start 10 I will get that myself, as well as the regular Windows Blinds for some styles and better transparency, or rather "Aero".

I have always hated all the desktops which is why I use still use Webshots Desktop with professional photos from all over the world. They changed their whole service a few years back but I saved the installers and my gallery of almost 3,500 photos and I have actually sold quite a few units based on my use of the Webshots Desktop as people love it with animals, undersea, outerspace, foreign sites and all kinds of great professional photos.
I thought it was defunct but see it must have made a return!

Yeah I noticed they did make a comeback but it's not the same and I nice a nice gallery with some of my own work there which they deleted. At some point I cannot remember when they started making you pay for the higher resolution pictures/backgrounds and that turned a lot of people off but like all other good software eventually paying customers is the end result of hard work and popularity.

I still have the old desktop installers so I simply add the new photos into the desktop as I always did. The actual company went into the photo processing business and are probably legally dead by now but I would bet someone else bought the name. Before the desktop went down they gave us keys to turn all the old photo desktop into normal jpegs which I also did so I can go either way. I had a string of desktop sales lastyear all based on this desktop and when it was over I sold about a dozen new custom desktops with the webshots desktop on it as the primary reason they bought them! It was friends and relatives of a community secretary in a local boro seeing the desktop and wanting it in the worst way.

I did away with webshots when Windows 7 was released.
I use my own photos and have them set to change every 10 seconds.

Yeah I remember when you did that but I saved the old uninstaller, not the new one that was trying to force adds up our butts and you cannot beat 3500 professional photos!
