Looking for a few suggestions on a new laptop

Okay, So I want my computer back, My girlfriend moved in and has basically taken my computer over( I even have a kitten screen saver now...). SO I want to get her a Laptop, I was thinking just a dual core with a couple gigs of memory I don't even really need that big of a HD, maybe 200-250gigs. I am not really worried about a great Video card. But what I do want is a decent sized screen 15-17in with high resolution, and good battery life. A good warranty would also be nice. So does any one have any suggestions?? Oh and my budget will be $800.

I would suggest that if you run into something that looks good to you that you post the specs as there will people aware particularly of the basic CPU that comes with it.

 

I was thinking I might just order a dell Studio xps laptop here are the specs.

the price on it is 1,200 a little more then i wanted to spend, but not really a problem if it is a good deal. what do you guys think should i go with a dell or just look around for something cheaper?

 

Well I would wait for the real experts, that price seems pretty steep but there may be something that makes it worth the money. I just don't see it.

 

why a lappy patrick? can you not set a desktop up for her? just think side by side lans

Laptops have VERY poor performance to $$$ ratio

 

this be the option I went for but then I wanted to play with networking as well, next is to find an excuse for a server then talk her round to justifying the cost

Well we want something mobile so we are not stuck in front of the desk all the time, And She is going to be making trips back and forth to san Francisco. so that will be nice for her to have around.

 

I plan on buying my first house next year, So I am going to wait for the second desktop and home server until I have that extra room for the office.

 

A lappy is more expensive for less spec.
£500 here which is the equivalent to around $800 dollars basically gets you a laptop with the internals from R2D2

 

Thats why i was thinking about going with a dell,I can spend more and just have a payment which wont be very much.

 

most companies will offer you payment options if you are going to spend anything on a lappy that you can actually use you are looking at the £1000 mark

 

Yeah the one i am looking at is 1200 with an extra 9 cell battery. I think I might just order it and get it over with. seems like one of the best deals with a good warranty.

 

What do you mean by use? What is it that you can do with the more expensive units that you cannot with a lower priced one with a decent CPU. If the answer is gaming only, (or mostly) our members should know that.
