This column appeared in another forum I am on and rather than quote various parts of it I thought it made sense to just link it. One thing is for sure and that is it is quite unique and well worth the read.
    Mainstream Media:
    Quote:
June 6, 1944, 160,000 Allied troops landed along a 50-mile stretch of heavily-fortified French coastline to fight Nazi Germany on the beaches of Normandy, France. General Dwight D. Eisenhower called the operation a crusade in which “we will accept nothing less than full victory.” More than 5,000 Ships and 13,000 aircraft supported the D-Day invasion, and by day’s end on June 6, the Allies gained a foot- hold in Normandy. The D-Day cost was high -more than 9,000 Allied Soldiers were killed or wounded -- but more than 100,000 Soldiers began the march across Europe to defeat Hitler......read the rest here:

I don't care for political posts in a computer help forum.

The whole of the above is a big wind up, taking the P*** out of the so called politically correct society we live in.

In reality, if that invasion were to be done today and with the modern fighting technology we have, I doubt if it would be done with landing craft coming in from the sea, be more like helicopter gun ships in the first wave followed by massive transporter helicopters filled with men. No one would need to wade ashore like they did in 1944. Plus the air cover from missiles and drone aircraft.
In fact it would be nothing like the original D day.

Quite true Nev and I also wonder if the huge deception pulled on the Germans where they had a fake army with tanks and cars made out of balloons under General Patton's control set to invade the "Pas de Calais" and thus caught the Germans off guard completely at Normandie. Of course with this Congress none of that would ever have been approved anyway so the Germans would still control Europe!

Interesting thought. Though any chances of a D-Day with Germany's current chancellor Ms. Merkel is non-existent. She is too busy pleasing her 'allies'.

Even if the current Congressional session now is proven useless, you still have the Russian special forces fighting from the East. And with them, there is still hope that Europe would have been liberated.

I really doubt that Russia could have toppled the Nazi regime alone.

Neither could have the western forces alone. Having Germany fight a war on two fronts was very beneficial to the victors of WWII. But if either side were have to have withdrawn support, there is always the other that will fight on. The British Empire counting the Aussies and Kiwis had a well trained army to counter the Nazi from the west if the US had not enter the war.

Of course you are right that war was mostly won because it was on 2 fronts. The British field armies with the Aussies and Canadians probably would not have been sufficient though to win the war on the west imho, any more than they did in WW1.
