IDT Audio IDT High Definition Audio CODEC took out my audio

I'm using Vista Home Premium and just installed the IDT Audio IDT High
Definition Audio CODEC update today. After rebooting I have no playback
devices. I can not Skype, can not play back CDs or listen to the internet
    radio.

In addition, when I look at installed updates to remove an update, this
particular one is not listed. Suggestions?

    Hi there,

Never take drivers from windows update unless they are intended for
    Microsoft hardware.

If an updated driver is needed because the hardware does not work proper go
to the manufacturers website to look for an updated driver.

If it ain't broke: do not try to"FIX" it.

If you did take the optional drivers from windows update try booting last
known good configuration, rolling back on the driver or use system restore
    or
do a windows repair installation or restore from the system backup you
    hopefully made.

    Best regards,
    Michel Denie

Hi. thanks for the advice. I first went to Device Manager (before reading
anyadvice here) and removed that update per Windows instructions (provided
somewhere in Windows Update, clicking to MS site and reading some basic
stuff). I removed that driver, rebooted and was told that I needed new
drivers. Windows then reinstalled the same driver and I had the same
    problem.

I then went to 'Backup and Restore Center' and reinstalled the settings from
days before (I just got back from a short vacation). Now everything seems
to be back to normal. Lesson learned, thanks. DH

I updated this update thinking it will fix my problem, sometimes when I am
playing music with windows media player and then close media player it would
still be playing, I need to close wmp but ctrl/alt/delete.
But disabled by audio drivers like everyone else.

For the record, not all experts agree with this advice. (In particular
Microsoft obviously doesn't or they wouldn't be distributing the drivers this
    way in the first place!)

However, the same advice applies as with any other updates - make sure you're
    backed up first.

    Hi Harry,

If you like to have a 99 % chance after updating a non MS driver for a nice

I've taken drivers from Windows Update more than once, on a selection of
different machines, and never had any problems. I think 99% is a little bit of
    an overestimate.

(Are you talking about the specific scenario where the currently installed
driver is non-Microsoft and Windows Update replaces it with a Microsoft driver?
It isn't quite clear from your wording.)

In general terms, if given the choice between a Microsoft driver and a
third-party driver, I'd try the Microsoft driver first and only install the
third-party driver if I was having problems.

Good lord. You MUST be kidding...

You should ALWAYS go the the manufacturer's site
for drivers. MS is clueless about other mgfrs hardware drivers and
the resulting mess of not applying the proper ones in the proper
    way.

Last month, the mess was all about an Intel video driver that
    users let AU download.

This month, it appears to be the IDT thing.

    Next month, ?

I would argue that many manufacturers are clueless about writing drivers for MS
operating systems, and hence the MS-written drivers (when they exist, typically
only for older components) are likely to be preferable.

    Hi Harry,
I was very clear by saying: If you like to have a 99 % chance after updating a non MS driver for a nice blue screen or a system that keeps rebooting if not disabled: be my guest.

So drivers should be taken from the manufacturer only.

I'll add a follow up to this and my now solved problem.

After I reverted to an earlier 'restore' I tried to recreate this same
problem by going into Device Manager and update my Sigma Tel High Definition
Audio CODEC. After updating the driver I of course had the problem I wrote
here about. So instead of using System Restore, I used Roll Back Driver in
Device Manager (Under Sound, video and games). To my surprise that didn't
solve my problem and I was still left with no Audio Playback devices.

I was forced again to use System Restore. I'm not a Windows wiz though I've
been using Windows for about 15 years. Had this problem happened to my wife
(and countless others) a lot of time would have been wasted while they would
have tried to figure out how to solve this. A problem like this should not
have occured _and_ rolling back the driver using that option in Device
Manager should have worked _but_ it didn't.

Just passing this on ... perhaps someone else can benefit from the time I
    spent on this. DH

Try this ... I'm certainly not an expert, but if this works, let me know -
reboot your computer but first unplug your speakers and anything in your
headphone output. Reboot again and plug everything back in. It's possible
Windows might 'see' the items on the second attempt.

I'm back to normal but I may try this myself (after first creating a new
    Restore point).

This update appears to be part of the "fix" for those of us with sound
cards that will not update to vista sp1. (I have a gateway with a sigmatel
driver). If your sound is gone after the update (and it seems everyones is)
Contact your computer hardware support, they should be able to point you to a
sound driver. Download that driver and re-install. Note that the gateway
one is "unsigned", but accept it anyway. Sound should come back. Don't hit
check for updates on the microsoft automatic update button, (I did and it
gave me the same IDT codec update, suspect I might have to redo the steps to
get rid of it). Hopefully the vista sp1 update should become available.

    JAK....

I'd suggest you reboot and try again after 10 minutes or so.

I had a similar issue after the update came through last night. First I
tried to roll back the driver in the Control Panel, then rebooting but that
didn't work. Then I attempted system restore to the point just prior to
installing the update. All seemed well, but then it said that the restore
was not successful. I rebooted again, then I allowed Windows Defender to do
it's thing (apparently it runs automatically every time my system starts).

Once I was sure there was nothing running in the background, (anti-virus,
etc) I attempted system restore again. I didn't touch it until I knew for
sure that it was finished. That did the trick! I am back to where I was
prior to the update and my sound is working just fine.

Also, while I realize this forum is not to debate the point of whether to
download from Microsoft or manufacturer's websites, I DO want to make a
general observation in this regard. I went to the manufacturer's site for
this particular update. They recommend that you do your updates from
Microsoft before attempting to get the update there. In my opinion, the most
prudent thing to do would be to update via Microsoft. If there are issues,
and they can't be resolved through Microsoft, THEN go directly to the
    manufacturer.

I agree that Microsoft written devices and updates are probably most likely
to be preferable. In fact, since I began using computers back in the 'old
days', the biggest issues I have ever had with drivers was when I installed
outside of the Microsoft Update platform. Oh, and many people do not have
the knowledge or skills to choose the correct drivers from often complicated
    manufacturer's websites.

    Just my 2 cents worth.

    Hello.

Just read your last response. I have the same problem, no sound after the
update. No help in "backup and restore". Couldn't be done. And no help in
what you just suggested to "Jim".

I hope to avoid a total reboot. Any new suggestions up your sleeve?

    Hopeful

Not so clear! Start by defining "non MS driver". A driver for hardware that
wasn't produced by Microsoft? A driver that wasn't written by Microsoft?

Do you mean when the original driver is non-MS and the new driver is MS? When
the original driver and the new driver are both non-MS? When the original
driver is MS and the new driver is non-MS? All three?

I disagree. My experience with Windows tells me that the best bet is the driver
built into the operating system, when there is one. Adding drivers written by
the hardware manufacturer is an invitation to pain. (Of course, in many cases
    you don't have any option.)

... are you talking about Windows Vista in particular?

    Harry.
