I just bought windows 8 and a new SSD today, I installed windows 8 on my old hd then did a data migration to my new SSD. Once I rebooted it said there was an issue with the boot file and that I should insert my bootable disc and restart. Once my windows 8 disc was in I restarted and the same thing happened... Now with my old drive as the first priority in my bios my computer runs but not off of my SSD as I wish it would.
First of all I'd like to understand why I can't simply install windows 8 onto my SSD without having to go through with the migration process (just a clean install) and how come there are no boot files on my SSD?

Hi. Take the old HDD out out the computer. Install Windows 8 on the SSD and it will boot.
Explain more later as I have to go out now.

I tried to remove the old HDD and do that but I an unable to get anywhere. I just get the same error message. Would a picture of the error screen be helpful?

I think you better start from scratch. You say in post 1 you have the old hard drive set as first boot.
How do you expect the SSD to boot, seriously?

1 Disconnect the old Sata HDD.

2 Go into the Bios and set your boot order to 1 CD ROM 2 SSD.

3 While in the Bios set your sata configuration to Sata ports 1-4 to AHCI and ports 5-6 to IDE config.

4 Your SSD should be connected to Sata port 1 on the mobo

5 Your sata (old HDD) should be connected to Sata port 5 (IDE and your CD ROM to sata port 6
    (IDE)
6 Remove any data you have put on the SSD till the operation system is installed.

7 Format the SSD to NTFS and reinstall Windows.

Some Motherboards will not accept SSD's and Sata Hard Drives at the same time.
    I know from experience.

What happened here.? You didn't bother to give us an update.

Hi, I think DSTM meant, that it was the last thing to do before installing windows again.

DSTM is in Australia, however when it is his morning, he can guide you through what you need to do within the BIOS on that page, or even how to get to a different BIOS page if needed. I am not conversant with SSD drives or even Windows 8, so he is best to explain what is needed, a good technical guy and good friend he is.

Hi Syl. There is no need to format your SSD before installing Windows8, as Windows8 formats on install.
I always format any HDD before install as I think formatting before install is good practice.

I have had a look at your Bios image and you are in the right place. If there is no option to set to AHCI then I think I know your problem.
These options don't show unless you have your Sata Config set to Enhanced.
There will be 3 options 1 Disable 2 Enhanced 3 Compatible.
Make sure it is set to Enhanced.
Have a look at this Award Bios and you should be able to set your Award Bios the same. (Arrows)
Do you have the option to set your Sata mode same as below image?
If not you won't get near the performance you are hoping for.

What version of Windows8 did you buy and did it come with a product Key Sticker attached?
Also could you tell us your mobo name and version numbers?
If you don't know your motherboard make and version, please download "Speccy Free" and it will tell you.

    Thanks.

    Thanks Nev for the link.

Hi Sli. In your post 7 you are in the right section to make these changes.
Unless you understand how to navigate the bios we aren't getting very far.

I could tell you to install windows8 and then make the changes, but that involves a registry change and getting required drivers.
With respect I won't suggest this route as you would be sure to mess up the registry.

So it's either learn to navigate your Bios and make the changes or take your computer to someone experienced in this area.A computer shop wouldn't charge much to set up your bios as for the experienced it shouldn't take longer than 2 minutes. Then you take the computer home and install Windows8.

If you want to learn how to navigate your Bios then have a look at this PDF.
