Much has been said about the Windows 10 free upgrade for consumers that will release on July 29, but very little has been uncovered about what the process might be for clean installs after the upgrade.

Richard covered this topic just a couple weeks ago, but there were burning questions remaining even then.
Here's a little more clarification from Microsoft. More and more of the free upgrade pieces are falling into place.

    Clean install activation

Once your device upgrades to Windows 10 using the free upgrade offer it will activate online automatically. This information will be stored as a record so when you perform subsequent installations, the activation code will be automatically applied, as long as it’s the same computer and the exact same Windows 10 edition.

As long as you take advantage of the free upgrade offer time period (1 year from July 29), you will be able to clean install the same edition of Windows 10 that you upgraded to on the same device during and after the free upgrade offer. A new license will not be required for purchase since activation is automatic.

    Clean install options

Installation media will be made available for you to download (ISO) so that you can create installation media on a USB drive or DVD. Product key information will not be required and Windows 10 will activate online automatically. The online activation will happen automatically after a clean install of Windows 10 if the device has already been upgraded and activated online the same Edition of Windows 10.

    Clean installs for hardware changes

If something major happens to the device that requires something as monumental such as a motherboard change (basically turning it into a new computer), Windows 10 will require re-activation – which will require you to purchase a license. This is what Microsoft means when it says "life of the device."

Additionally, you can't transfer a license to a new device. But, if something disastrous does happen, it's usually more cost-effective to just buy a replacement device anyway and that should come pre-loaded with Windows 10. However, if you happen to buy a new device with an older OS installed, you can get the free Windows 10 upgrade as long as it falls in the free upgrade offer period.

    Upgrade options per OS

Not every OS version will get options for clean installation media. Here's the breakdown…

Basically they are saying that you must first use the upgrade path in order to get activation first. In other words you cannot just go straight to a clean install as the activation process won't have happened.

Exactly but subsequent installs can be done cleanly without the upgrade path involved.

I wonder how many we get where the upgrade path either fails completely or doesn't fully install correctly? Possibly messing up the entire drive and data in the process, we can only wait and see.

They are recommending that before you move to Windows 1o using the upgrade path, that you make a complete back up of your existing operating system.

I can see so many people messing this up that are not really in the know.
Too many options and all won't back up their system no matter how many times you advise them to.

I don't really see that happening since the install will be just like another Windows update.

What I meant was when people don't like Windows 10 and try to revert back to earlier OS's I can see problems arising.

Yes, if you have the operating system DVD, that should be fine.
I say, "should" because at this point, we don't know if the license key will still be good.

I hope it works. I really want to check windows 10 out and this is a perfect way for me to do it. I have stopped traveling so I no longer need or want this laptop anymore, especially another not another Acer.

I have been thinking about your statement and my reply and assuming you meant a key for W 10. If I don't like W 10, I won't need a key. I will just reformat my PC back to 8 and I have what I need for that.

I upgraded from 8 to 8.1 without any trouble, but regarding W 10 I don't know the upgrade route from a clean install. When I upgraded to W 8.1 I just let it do it's thing and it worked out well. I am good at what I do, much better than my friends and neighbors, but this stuff is over my head. It doesn't worry me though, I will muddle through and if I have problems it will be just another learning experience. The things I know about computers I learned by trial and error, reading in a help forum and googling. I googled myths one time and you wouldn't believe the things we were taught and told growing up that are not true.

I have read and reread this way too many times and the idea that we have to do the upgrade to be able to do the clean install is absurd but that is the way I read it.

That's how I took it too.
Seems kind of ridiculous, doesn't it?

Yeah and its not that I expect or even care about a "free lunch" but that is just too much. I think I will wait and buy my dvd so I can do it my way unless I see we can download and burn an iso from this system. I can accept that Upgrades may not be the scourge they used to be, but the one machine I will put 10 on is a mess and upgrading it to 10 will not make it any better. It's the All-in-One I sit on every Wednesday night for our Paltalki Chatroom and it needs to be bulldozed, not upgraded. I am so happy with my new Gen 5 desktop on Windows 7, and I will not mess with the OS on there for anything. It has a faster bootup than any Windows 8 pc and just runs like a dream. Why would I screw with that?

Why don't you just do a clean install of Windows 7 or 8 on it and go from there, Rich?

You know what Cindy, that is a stellar idea! Do a clean install of 7 (because if I did 8 then I would have to upgrade to 8.1 afterwards because that is the one it has the code for in the bios)....love it I'll do it!
