    Hi there,
i was wondering if anyone could help me please? (I apologise if this is posted in the wrong section).
Yesterday i had a phishing email about an apparant paypal payment to Skype. Although i opened it, i never clicked on any link in the email. I then forwarded the email to Paypal's Spoof email address for them to check out. It may just be a coincidence but later on, my laptop crashed (nothing new there as it often does through over heating) but when i restarted and Firefox asked if i would like to 'Restore' session i could access any site without problem but my 'Hotmail'. Emails would show up but if i clicked on anything the page would just freeze and say 'Not responding'.
I have since ran Malware and Spyware scans and updated Windows and even updated to Firefox4 today but still the same problem. I can access my 'Hotmail' account on someone elses computer with Firefox and it is fine on my laptop if i open using 'Internet Explorer'. Any help or advice would be much appreciated thanks. Just to add im on Firefox at the moment accessing this forum with no problems.

Hi ONY. I would clear your cache and recent history.

Also Go to tools/options/contents/enable java script-advanced/check off disable or replace context menu

I used to have Hotmail but found it was a security risk.

Maybe time to look for another providor.

Thanks for the quick reply DSTM.......I always clear cache and recent history but have just 'checked off disable or replace context menu' as you suggested but it made no difference. Ive actually just noticed that the problem is NOT just limited to my 'Hotmail' but it appears if i open more than one page for 'Firefox' i also get 'not responding' message with pages freezing and need to close them and reopen one?

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the add-ons is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).

Hi again DSTM sorry for late reply but Firefox just kept freezing and computer crashed when i tried to get into the add-ons in Safe Mode. So was unable to alter anything there. I had to get back online in normal mode and can only open the one Firefox page.....as the add ons open a new tab/page and everything just freezes.

Hi BeeCeeBee i started the computer (Windows) in safe mode and tried accessing the firefox add-ons but it just kept freezing and crashing. Ive just got onto the Firefox add-ons now but can't see anywhere where there is an option to set it to 'Default Theme'

Try starting in Firefox safe mode and make any changes there.

Also I read where McAfee Site Advisor and Norton are causing FF to freeze.

Might sound a daft question but how do i start Firefox in safe mode? I can see an option in the 'Help' part of Firefox that says 'Restart with add-ons disabled'? As for McAfee and Norton, i don't have any of those on my laptop.

Start > Run > type "firefox -safe-mode" without the exclamation marks.Click OK

You now will be in FF Safe mode and a box will come up giving you options.

If you close Firefox and then go to you program list in the start menu. Locate Mozilla Firefox and the option to open it in safe mode should be there. Frankly I am not sure how different that is from "start with add-ons disabled" but is worth a try. If all is well then we need to sort out what add on or extensions may be causing your problems.

Well i tried clicking on 'start Firefox in safe mode' via 'Start > programs > Mozilla........But got a message saying could not do that as it had either been deleted, renamed or moved? So i tried via the option i mentioned above...Restarting Firefox with add-ons disabled. I then got a message pop up saying i was starting Firefox in safe mode and would i like to continue. I did but the problem is still there. Firefox is extremely slow to open and cannot seem to manage more than one page without freezing and getting the 'not responding' message. Is it worth unistalling and reinstalling Firefox? Would this make a difference? Im at a total loss as to why this is happening.

I was using Firefox3 when this problem started but upgraded to Firefox4 yesterday.

OK I assume from your answer that this is happening in both versions of FF. Or, put another way, downloading FF4 has not solved the problem.

Before you start over from scratch with FF try creating a new profile. It may well be that it is your profile that is corrupted rather than FF itself.

This will give you all the information that you need but if anything is not clear please let us know.

If a new profile works you can import all your data and from the old profile and then delete it.

Thanks BeeCeeBee, yes the problem was happening on both versions of FF and downloading FF4 didn't solve the problem. Ive just created a new profile as you suggested and it loaded really quickly as it's supposed to. Ive tried logging into my Hotmail account via the 'new' profile and all is working just fine. Really appreciate all the help and advice given.
Two more questions if you don't mind?.....

1: How or what could my other FF profile have become corrupted?

2: How do i import all my data from the old profile?

I never tried that one Ony although I have absolute faith in KlickKatt's recommendations. The link I gave you above has all the information that you need. There is a link for recovering information from an old profile. That being said, if KlickKatt's was is simpler, by all means go for it.

A for how it happened, there are a number of ways and it is not all that uncommon. I have always thought that Demonic possession is the usual culprit but not everyone agrees.

Hiya KlickKatt thanks for that link but when i go to open it, it says 'windows cannot open this file' and gives me the option to use the web to find program to open it or choose from one on my computer. What sort of program would be needed to open this file? So i know if i have that program on my computer. Many thanks.
