Hello, I was wondering if any of you might be able to help me. Today I opened my laptop and saw a message that read: Secure Boot Image failed to verify with *ACCESS DENIED* Press any key to continue.

I can enter BIOS w/F1 when I press the power key, but that seems to be the only place I can go, and most of the options are grayed out. It won't let me disable secure boot. I pressed F11 on startup in an attempt to restore the system, but all I'm able to get is a stationary white cursor line in the upper left corner of a blank screen. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

(Background: My computer is a Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Carbon, and I was running Windows 8 until the free Windows 10 upgrade came out a few months ago. I haven't installed anything in a while except Windows and Lenovo updates. I've had a bit of a heating issue, so eight days ago I replaced the thermal paste. The machine's been running much cooler, but I've been experiencing random hibernations--usually once every 3 hrs. or so, but occasionally two in 15 min. A few of those times, I had a message that said something about my battery not being detected, and this happened both when the computer was plugged in and when it wasn't. It still charged like normal.)

Are there any USB devices attached? While in the BIOS is the HDD showing?

Check the boot order and make sure there is no CD/DVD in the drive.

Thanks for answering! But no, this computer doesn't even have a CD/DVD drive. And there's no USB or external HD attached.

Is there any thign else besides F1 to access BIOS like press for boot options?

Do you perchance have the recovery software?

You may have not added not enough or to much.

If you put too much on the core, it can act like an insulator and actually cause temperatures to rise.
If you really go overboard and get it all over the rest of the cpu, there is a small chance that it could short the traces on the cpu.

No, only F1. When the Secure Boot notification pops up, if I hit enter twice, the boot menu pops up. It has 2 tabs: Boot Menu (subsets: Windows Boot Manager {which only takes me back to the image failed to verify message} and ATA HDDO: SanDisk SD5SG2256G1052) and Application Menu (subsets: Diagnostic Splash Screen, Lenovo Diagnostics, and Setup {which just takes me back where F1 on startup would lead}).

I think when I replaced the fan several months ago that I didn't put enough paste. Temps were still high (soared into the 80s sometimes), but when I looked the other day I could see how thin it was and replaced it. Temps have been consistently below 60 since then.

If you've got any ideas, please share them. I want to salvage my computer and my word documents, but don't care about anything else. If there's a way to do a system restore, I'd jump on that.

If you have a USB drive and Live Linux we can defiantly get the data.

I have a USB drive and I'm on my old Toshiba. Is there a way to get Live Linux from here or does it have to already be on my affected laptop?

No what we are going to do is create a bootable USB drive with Linux on it so we can transfer the files you want off the HDD on the affected system onto another storage device.

What happen when you press any key to continue?

Some times you can access the system.

Underneath, there's a grayed-out [OK]. I've pressed every key on the keyboard, but only enter and escape work, and they take me to the same Boot menu/application menu.

I put Linux on a USB, and it showed up in the boot menu, but when I clicked on it, it just returned me to the Secure Boot Image failed to verify screen. I looked in the boot order (which it won't let me change) and the USB is number 8 on the list. I can't figure out a way to load it.

The same thing happens as before. The boot menu pops up, and it says:
    Windows Boot Manager
USB CD: SanDisk SanDisk Cruzer 1
    ATA HDDO: SanDisk 5D5SG2256G1052E
    USB HDD: SanDisk SanDisk Cruzer

Whenever I click on any of them, it just returns me to the boot menu (except for the ATA HDDO option. That sends me back to the Secure Boot Image failed to verify message.

Thanks for the link to the manual. I will definitely check it out and see if anything jumps out at me (I have a bad feeling that nothing will though). I do appreciate your help. I've posted my problem on five different forums and you've been by far the most informative person I've talked to.

The only other option is to call the company or email them and see what they may be able to do.

Thank you and if I think of or find something will let you know.

You can get the message if your hard drive is inaccessible, that is the hard drive (hardware) is seen by the BIOS but cannot be read :(

Good point. Best way to find out is to connect the HDD via USB to another working system and they could also pull the data that way.
