Rich: You will be thrilled to know I have FINALLY joined this century and signed up for Verizon 25/25 FiOS High Speed Internet connection. Hope all the bad things, if any, I have heard or imagined are untrue and all the good things ARE true. Hardly an estimated difference in the phone bill expected, and will save $22-27 per month on dialup and connect charges. Installation set for 9/2/15.

Yeah that and a Solid State drive at the best things you can do for overall computing experience in my opinion. Fast net surely helps :)

BG I am stunned and speechless! Get your seat belt ready my friend as you go from the pain of a double rootkit in a dentists chair, the way I describe dialup, to dancing on the clouds!

Since I know nothing, I have some questions. Will have 3 desktops and 2 laptops. Said I must have a router. Can have 4 Desktops and 2 laptops without extra charge. Does the router sit in a room, maybe plug into the wall outlet, and the desktops plug into it? And do laptops simply connect with a transmitter to communicate with router? Do any other wires have to go into the house or to other rooms? Guess I will find out soon but would like to kow what to expect. does anything get installed into any of the computers or just plug in?

Yes, the desktops will plug in to the router by Ethernet cables and the laptops will connect wirelessly.

You don't need to install anything else, BG, the laptops will connect automatically after you first set them up wirelessly.
The desktops should see the connection the first time that they boot after connecting the Ethernet cable.

Just wondered if older desktops are ready for wireless or if they have to be converted somehow-either a card or cable plugged into them? I am talking Compaq 1998, 1999, 2004. I am sure the laptops have wireless capability. Not sure if desktops will be able to. Dont want or need network-just individual computers to connect to internet at higher speed, if possible.

You'll want to connect the desktops via Ethernet cables, BG.

I suppose tech will have to run cable to room with desktops. But how do I tell by looking at PC or owners manual if it is capable of ethernet and wireless? Maybe in Control Panel, Network Connections, etc? Gonna take a look in a few minutes and see if I can find it.

You should be able to install a wireless network USB dongle or PCI card into the desktop. This will allow it to access your wireless network What's the make/model of the desktop?

I believe you have older pcs with earlier OS than Windows XP and they will be tough. You can put ethernet cards in them but you will find it unlikely they will run wire through your house to other locations. You may have to find someone else to do that. Wireless usb adapters are the easiest but again I doubt you will find drivers below XP, as XP may even be a problem now as many are eliminating XP drivers from their websites but any pc with a usb port can use a wireless adapter providing you find a driver for the OS. Pci wirless cards are also available for all desktops but again for older units drivers are the issue.

If you have an old machine which you can't install a wireless network adapter onto and don't want to run an Ethernet cable, try one of these: TP_Link AV500 Powerline Edition
    http://www.amazon.com/TP-LINK-TL-WP...=8-2&keywords=TP_Link+AV500+Powerline+Edition

It'll give you two Ethernet ports, plus an new wireless access point. You won't need the wireless access point now. You may find it conveniennt for future use. Additionally, if you want an Ethernet port in an additional room, you can add up to 7 additional extenders.

I sold one of these kits to a customer yesterday. Told her if she had problems, to contact me and I'd install it. She hasn't called yet.

Compaq W98SE 5660 and 5852; XP S4000. Might be simpler to just go to Walmart and buy an entry level 3rd laptop just for wife to use for internet access, or for me to do it with my laptops and forget the desktops. They are too old to be installing and remodelling.

As I think on it, I believe even if it already works, I will simply check Walmart for entry level sale or low priced laptops that need to be nothing fancy except have wireless internet capability for my wife to submit claims with, and I suspect these companies do not want to spend the extra money to make their systems backward compatible with all the older browsers and OS's. I can do everything I want to do and need to do with my current laptops except maybe not fast as I would like. And my wife only really needs the faster than dialup modern OS internet and not much if anything more. No hi-tech, just entry level. Sure I can find suitable Walmart store $350-450 laptop, maybe even on sale.
if have Verizon router does anything need to plug into the laptop or does main router do that? Sales person didnt mention anything more to buy. I think all the laptops need are to set up a new wireless connection but I have it disabled on my PCs.

All laptops today work wirelessly with wireless routers which I am sure you will have from Verizon.

You were right , Rich....should have come aboard long ago. since I can afford $17/month I may keep the dialup awhile for the older desktop, while my wife in near future acquires a laptop to use around the house. Knew there would be some initial issues but seems like it is an improvement.

FiOS Internet is great. All the other problems are not. Had to call DialUp provider tech to learn that the Windows Live Mail Outgoing Server settings were incorrect because Windows Updates changes them. I must have changed them to what I THOUGHT they were when I set up my dialup account because what was in the Outgoing servers and advanced boxes did not match. They had probably been updated and I thought they were wrong so I must have changed them and caused myself to not be able to send mail. seems OK now. When in doubt, call TECH.

Still don't know what to do about the wireless and local connection that says it is OK but doesn't work. Maybe best just to leave it hard wired to Ethernet adaptor.

But wireless that works and FiOS 25/25 internet REALLY is FAST. Downloads in seconds, not hours.

Just understand that Microsoft messages aren't necessarily right. I see Nic cards that say they are working properly all the time that don't work at all, and the same is true for wireless. You can buy refurbished DLink wireless Usb cards for $12-15 and prove it. I am never without a few of those BG. These things will outlast both of us and I found you half price yet!

Yeah...I have learned usually not to believe the canned messages that come up. But do you think a USB adapter like this will work? Price seems affordable and it frees me up to relocate to different rooms. Do they need any manual configuration or do they just plug in and start working wireless? The computer wireless network is already configured. Nice if I could unplug ethernet, plug in a USB adaptor and be able to go around house with laptop. I know you cant guarantee but if you think it might work I would try it.

Do you have to disable the existing adaptors or set anything up again? Or just plug it in? Dont want to mess anything up since it IS working, but would like it to be wireless after all. Speed and mobolity are not the same thing- want BOTH.
