MOUNTAIN HOME, Ark. (AP) — An Arkansas veterinarian has kept a dog from going out with a bang after the animal ate 23 live rifle rounds.

Benno, the 4-year-old Belgian Malinois, had surgery last week to remove the .308 caliber ammunition from his stomach, The Baxter Bulletin reported. Owner Larry Brassfield said Benno has eaten socks, magnets and marbles, but he didn't expect the animal would bother a bag of bullets by his bed. Brassfield and his wife realized Benno needed medical attention after the pet vomited up four rounds.

Veterinarian Sarah Sexton at All Creatures Animal Hospital removed 17 rounds from Benno's stomach but left two in his esophagus, which the dog was allowed to discharge on his own. "This is something they certainly did not cover in school," Sexton said. "I've had dogs eat things before, mostly stuffed toys. Once I had one swallow a hearing aid, but I think this takes the cake."

Brassfield said he won't leave ammo lying around anymore but isn't optimistic that Benno will stick to dog food. "You can baby-proof a house," Brassfield said. "But I don't think it's possible to Benno-proof a house. Lord knows, we've tried and failed."

Lucky dog, and does bring to mind jokes about it being a gun dog!

However, this does remind me, and I hope it brings a smile to your face at least.
Way back in the mid 1950's when I was around seven or eight, a family friend had a clip of 303 ammo smuggled out of the services after the end of WWII.
One cartridge of the clip was deactivated by careful removal of the bullet from the cartridge, the charge emptied and fired at a safe distance, then also the percussion cap at the back end fired off using a hammer and nail.
The bullet was then pushed back into the now deactivated cartridge and then given to me as a curiosity and play thing. (I doubt if that would be done these days)
I took it to junior school to show off what I had got and in some silly trick of putting just the bullet in my mouth for a game, I accidentally swallowed it!! I still had the now empty cartridge in my hand of course.
My parents duly rushed me off to the doctors who prescribed a laxative and then parents told to make sure it passed through OK, which it did of course.
However the doctor did have a laugh as he said it was the first time he had needed to remove a bullet from someone that hadn't actually been fired at them. :big_ha:

Great story Nev and N3 also...I would never think a dog would swallow bullets on the other hand since I have never had a firearm in any home I lived in, I would never know either.
