I just woke up today to find that my internet on my PC stopped working. (Working find yesterday)
I go to 'troubleshout' in "Windows Network Diagnostics" and it said "Plug an Ethernet cable into this computer" with some more info bellow explaining.

(Im running windows 7 by the way and have a router connected to my PC, thus i have an ethernet cable running from my PC to router, then my router back to the modem)

I replaced the ethernet cable connecting my PC to my router with a spare ethernet cable i had thinking it was the actual cable that broke. Didn't fix the problem.

The router is working fine and i can connect via wifi with my laptop and phone.
My router is a Belkin SURF N300 and i am running Windows 7.

Could it be the actual ethernet port on my PC? Don't know what to do....

    Thanks

    Hi BallerAL.
A couple of things to check.

Check Device manager for any Red Crosses, Yellow Exclamation Icons or errors.

Try a system restore to a point before this issue started.

    Reseat your NIC

    Uninstall and Reinstall the Drivers.

Go to the Mobo manufacturers website and download Mobo Chipset Drivers and install.

When the network cable is plugged into the ethernet port, is the link light (small round green light next to ethernet port) lit up and flashing?

I checked device manager. Clicked on most of the relevent things to expand them and there were no cross's or exclamation Icons.

But i did a system restore back a couple of weeks ago well before this issue occured - and it fixed it! Thank you! My internet is working!

But regarding the light on the ethernet port - theres nothing flashing. I honestly can even tell if there are even any lights next to the port, i cant see any.

But i guess it doesnt matter because its all working now. Thanks for your help.

Its not uncommon for Ethernet ports to have a fit, its usually the router not renewing the IP that causes you your issues.
Glad its sorted, and regarding the light, it is very small couple of mm by a couple of mm, some are orange (100mbit) and some are green (Gigabit), some have both, it flickers when sending/receiving data.
If it was on you would know about it, they may be small but they throw some light off

OK, its not working anymore. Argh.
Worked for a couple of hours after the system restore (which it infact told me hadn't been complteted properly) and then i put the computer in 'sleep' mode.
Turned it back on and now its now working. Did the system restore again and it still doesnt work.....

Oh and speaking of the router not renewing the IP i think i may know what is causing this problem. My old router's power supply burned out so i replaced it with the current Belkin router (mentioned above) and the internet was working fine for a day then the next night it stopped working. May be because of my router now that i think of it but the error windows gives me is regarding the ethernet port so im not sure.

You will get an error on the internet port if the internet stops working normally.

Have you configured the router from its home page after swapping it for the old one?

open a cmd window and type ipconfig /release (notice space between g and /) and hit enter, when it returns type ipconfig /renew (notice space between g and /) then hit enter.
to close cmd type exit and then hit enter

see how you get on, let us know if you are still getting issues and we will have a look at the settings in the NIC and router.

Actually right now it's all working again. I replaced the old router with my new one that works now and it has been working for about 2 days now.
Thanks anyway for your time i doubt the problem will occur again now with the new working router but if it does il definitely try what you said Dalo.
