Try a manual installation of KB973636. Download and *save* it from the
    link below:

Security Update for Microsoft Works 8 (KB973636)

Once the download completes, configure XP to start in a clean boot
state: How to configure Windows XP to start in a "clean boot" state

Use the Guided Help if the steps are too difficult for you to do.
Once you've rebooted to the clean boot state, which is not anywhere near
Alaska <g>, install the update, WindowsXP-KB958869-x86-ENU.exe.
    Restart again if prompted to.
If the update installed, then go back to

and either manually undo the clean boot steps or use the Guided Help
again " When you are prompted by Guided Help, click the Normal startup
    option ".

If the update still does not install contact MS for *no-charge support*
for getting the update installed -
