end of support?

Discussion in 'Windows XP' started by Bill Cunningham, Oct 18, 2009.

  1. Has MS annnounced any end of support or extended support for XP?

    Bill

  2. It's a good idea to check this newsgroup for similar posts before starting a
thread of your own. Two hours ago another poster asked "
When will MS Drop support for XP?" . . .

Oops. I didn't even think to check. Then will they do extended support?

Did you actually read the responses to the post you were directed to?

Have you read the other responses to your post and gone to the links
    provided?
    ( One's the same, practically. ;-) )

Internet search engines - fantastic tools. ;-)

You are *in* the extended support period.

What do you consider "support"? Your message headers:

    X-Newsreader: Microsoft Outlook Express 6.00.2900.2180
X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V6.00.2900.2180

reveal that you are running a very old and less secure version of OE. IE,
    and XP in general.

Support means visiting Windows Updates and keeping your computer up to date.
You are running a bare-bones version of XP/SP2 and are more than five years
    behind in updates, AKA "support".

If you patch your computer with all critical SP2 updates, support will
    continue until April, 2010.

If you install SP3, support will continue until April 2014.

People keep referring to the end of SP2 support as being April 2010... Even
    I have done it.

    Is that correct - or ... ?

    Service Pack Retires:
    July 13, 2010

Will they continue to push out updates that will install on SP2 or SP3
patched machines until the actual retirement date?

I wonder, but your link is saved and duly noted.

As for the OP, I stand by: Support = Updates.

No matter what their public policy, any company will provide support if
you are willing to pay them huge sums. Of course, you could then just
    hire your own support.

Now install all critical security updates offered at
. You're missing at least one, according
to your headers (Microsoft Outlook Express 6.00.2900.5512).

Then enable Automatic Updates to stay fully-patched!

How to configure and use Automatic Updates in WinXP:

Microsoft Outlook Express 6.00.2900.5843 it now says. Is that the most up

I have notice that my machine has seemed to slow down quite a bit. Would
it be recommended that I download atleast some of the of the optional
    patches?

Run a Defrag & reboot when done. I had to after SP2 and SP3. Then I would
recommend the optional patches if they pertain to what is on your machine. I
often see updates for Silverlight and it's not even installed.

The system says it doesn't need a defrag.

And it won't. Is it going to hurt anything by taking 5 minutes trying?
