Can you tell us a bit more? What make/model is your computer? If you know the make/model of the optical drive, please send it along. Otherwise we'll try to work with the computer make/model.

Also, are you using any software to burn the disk other than Windows?

I was using VLC media player to burn the disk.

That's good info. While we look into things, can you please check to see if you can burn the disk using Windows?

I'd tried before I started to use VLC, but wasn't having any luck with it which is why I switched to VLC.

I see some firmware updates on the web, but none that I'm familiar with. I've never had a need to update firmware on optical drives. The other thing to look at is the driver and I haven't encountered problems with them if the drive can see files.

You can try the burning software on our Recommended Software page at https://computerhelpforums.com/threads/chf-recommended-software.48136/. They're listed about 1/3 of the way down the page.

Also, try burning with Media Player.

This is one of the few non-manufacturers drivers sites that I trust.
    http://www.pcpitstop.com/libraries/driver/detail.asp?driver=HL-DT-ST~DVDRAM~GH41N~ATA~Device.html

If you look closely, there are only 2 different drivers for Windows 7.

The newest is from 2006 and is v. 6.1.7601.17514
    which I'm guessing you have.

Is your Windows 32 or 64 bit?
It looks like the 64 bit driver is popular, though how they get a rating of 150% escapes me. (I'm a retired math(s) teacher). The popularity should total 100% or less for all drivers listed under one category.

What type of DVD are you trying to burn?
