Lately with Firefox and Chrome I have been unable to drag and drop webite URLs from the address bar to desktop or a folder to create a shortcut. Has this been discontinued or might I have changed a setting I was unaware of. Now if I try I get a circle with a cross in in telling me I cannot do this action. Cannot drag a URL to desktop or folder and make a shortcut. Never happened before. There is also a padlock in the address bar and a shield icon that says no trackers known to Firefox were detected. If hover the padlock it says Verified by Let's Encrypt. I do not recall adding these to anything. This is a new version of Firefox 84.0.1 64bit. Also this message just showed up..... Your post in the thread Chrome Google browser shows download as a Firefox document was moved to Import browser passwords. Reason: new thread because of issue change

I notice the Chrome address bar only has the padlock and NOT the shield and drag & drop to desktop WORKS. The shield appears in the Firefox address bar.

Just found the protections dashboard in Firefox but unsure how to use it. I'm in Chrome now.

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/create-desktop-shortcut-website#firefox:win7:fx84 applies to Windows 7 and FF 84.

I'm using an earlier version of FF and it works for me. (Win 7). I just did it as a test. Note: I don't recommend having a lot of things on the desktop, it makes the computer work harder. I prefer to save websites as bookmarks. I then go through and remove bookmarks from time to time. I also regularly backup my bookmarks.
I create folders and put things in them on the desktop to de-clutter my desktop.

The question at hand is drag and drop of a URL when using Chrome and Firefox.

I found I can still drag & drop using both Chrome and Firefox on both Windows 7 and Windows 10.

I will retry it. I have Chrome, Firefox, and using a DuckDuckGo, Google, search engines. Gets confusing.

You do seem.to be confused at times. Why don't you stick with one browser? Most people do.

    It makes life easier.

Not sure. I was using Firefox and for some reason changed to Chrome. Maybe Firefox expired?? Was always happy with Firefox. Used to make notes on all I did but stopped.

12-29-20 2:02 pm. Using Chrome and Google search again because i cannot get rid of this privacy shield in the address bar. This new Firefox version if that is what it is is more complicated and privacy-oriented than I ever wanted or needed. Dozens of settings I do not even understand. Just want the privacy tracking shield protection OFF if possible so I can drag and drop to desktop and folders. Almost as if I am beginning with first computer like in 1998. Too complicated. Maybe safe and private but for me it is a nuisance.

Here's what my screen looks like using Firefox in Windows 10. I can click and hold on the padlock icon which is to the right of the shield. (You can see that if I hover over the padlock, it shows me that it's Verified by Let's Encrypt.) From there I can drag and drop it to the desktop.

With my windows 7 Home Premium SP1 I see the padlock, hover and see Verified by Encrypt and if I hold and drag to desktop or folder ccursor turns into a circle with line through it and nothing drags, drops or transfers to desktop or folder. Maybe I am missing something. Getting very confused by all this new stuff I have no time for. That is why I ave several browsers - if one does not work then maybe another will.

If I click the padlock I see Connection secure and I have not granted permissions Maybe I need to do something???
    Way too complicated.

Did you try dragging the padlock to your desktop?

Yes - and the shield also. Still the black circle with a line. Back on Chrome and DuckDuckGo search now. Opened up the info associated with padlock and shield. and tried looking a various setting I could find. I CAN drag and drop Padlock or other things in Chrome but NOT with Firefox 84 and the shield.
I have Chrome, Firefox, and Edge and Google and DuckDuckGo search shortcuts in quick launch.

Is tere a version of Firefox that would work with Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 64bit better than version 84.0.1 and be easier to understand and operate? I was always happy with Firefox until the version I was using expired and I changed to Edge and to Chrome.

No. The last thing you want to do is run an old unpatched browser. You should always use the latest version of a browser.

When I said I'm running an earlier version of FF, it is because I'm running a different version of FF called ESR. It is patched by Mozilla but because it doesn't have all the bells and whistles, it isn't updated as often.

If FF isn't working, then make Chrome your default browser.

That is about what I did. Just wondered though. I find with Chrome which has no shield I can drag/drop by holding down on the padlock. This is version:

Google Chrome is up to date
    Version 87.0.4280.88 (Official Build) (64-bit)
