Can someone suggest a freeware safe download for a recorder which I can use to download movies off of YouTube? The Downloader I have is the 4K Video Downloader brand. It records fine as long as I put the recordings on my hard drive; but if I put the downloads on my Samsung 2T flash drive, they will not play. Something about the codecs being VOB. My VLC player will not play them either.

You must be doing something wrong when transferring from 4k Video Downloader to the 2T flash drive. Don't record the YouTube file; download the file without playing it. None of mine have VOB only mp4.
I regularly download with 4K Videodownloader selecting mp4 and copy the files to a USB stick. I have no problem playing them from the stick.

I just put a stick in my laptop and tested one of the Vera episodes I have on the stick. It played fine.

Yes, I agree, and that is what I am trying to determine; exactly what I am doing wrong. I have been downloading the clip as I watch it. I can change that and just download it. Once downloaded, I transfer the movies to my external hard drive by two ways: drag/drop, right click/send. Those are the only two ways to do it that I know of. They play fine when I do either on the external hard drive. They also play fine when I do that on my pc hard drive. When I do the same procedure on the Samsung flash drive somehow the codecs changes to VOB, and they are not playable. Other movies on the flash drive I have previously added to the flash drive from other than 4K play fine. I will try downloading the file w/o watching it and see if that works. Thank you.

I tried the suggestion of just downloading and not watching, but that did not work. There may be no answer to this problem. One thing I have noticed is the files that do play from the USB are in a folder. Why that matters I do not know, or even if it does matter I do not know that either. While the files without the folder do not play. This observation may not have anything to do with the problem. All the video files there are MP4 files. If any of these rings a bell, please let me know; otherwise I assume it is an unknown quirk and nothing can be done. Thanks.

Note the icons on on the files that opens and the ones that don't open in VLC. VLC is set to open the one file, but not the others.

Right click on one of the files that don't open in VLC. Choose Open with ...>
    A context menu will appear.
    Select Choose another app.
At the bottom of the window, put a check mark in Always use this app to open ....
Select VLC player. You may have to click on More apps to find VLC
    Click OK.

Wish I could say that worked, but alas it did not. See attachment. We have tried just about everything, so I suppose it is a glitch that can't be corrected for some unknown reason. I will just stop using the Samsung and get another. Thanks.

Looking at the error shown 0xc100bf, it seems the file wants to play in Windows Media Player and NOT VLC.
Make sure you have the correct player chosen on whatever device you are trying to play the video on the Samsung drive.

What are you attaching the Samsung 2TB drive to?

I am attaching it to my laptop USB port.
I don't know, there is something really quirky about this. Likewise, I don't think it is a problem with the Samsung, as the vid that is in the Chicago folder is VLC, and it plays fine, but out of the folder it does not. Something happens to the vid apparently when I move it to the USB, which does not happen when I move it to my external hard drive. Some things just can't be solved.
