I followed Tony's advice (from the recent thread about connecting an external hard drive) today, and safely disconnected my external (backup) hard drive. I'll connect it next time I backup. Then I got to wondering, does the connection/disconnection cycle, over the life of the hard drive, cause more wear compared to leaving it connected? Is this anything worth worrying about?

Yes, Connecting and disconnecting hardware will cause some wear on the metals. Just as turning on/off a light switch will wear out the switch eventually. However, it’s insignificant compared to the value of data lost to Ransomeware.
