Had a client call me today that he had sent back a year and 1/2 old Dell XPS All-in-One Desktop to Dell that posted through a logo, Ssd bios and then nothing. They returned it to him after 2 months claiming that the motherboard needed replacement and they didn't have any.

With an i7 4790, 16 Gb ram and 27" All-in-One, this was over $2000 purchase lasted one and 1/2 years and Dell gave up. I tried a few different Linux live-cds and could only get them to boot so far but then Uefi bios has so many issues with Linux versions I decided it meant nothing. I replaced the hard drive and popped in a Windows 8 dvd the client had and installed Windows 8 in about 20 minutes after disabling "Secure Boot" and setting legacy settings for hard drive. Then through programs, endless Windows Updates and finally upgrade to Windows 8.1. Installed more programs and sat back and enjoyed playing with this thing.

It amazes that at a Dell plant, there is so little ability so as not to even recognize a dead hard drive and all it really took was to try and install Windows in the final analysis. So another Seagate piece of 2 gb trash bit the dust and almost cost this client a $2000 computer. I am not sure what made him call me when Dell said it wasn't repairable, but you can just bet he is happy enough he did!

    I'm not surprised at all.
You do realize, Rich that most of the warranty work for Dell is subcontracted out?

Regardless who tried to fix it and it has a warranty I would have thought Dell would have replaced his All in one with a new one with close as specs as possible if they couldn't fix. That's what I would have expected anyway.
Surely the Guy was compensated somehow.

It sounds as if the AIO was six months out of warranty.
    They don't care.

Yeah Cindy is right 6 mos out of warranty. What is odd is they are still calling him to find out how he is making out.
He can't wait for the next call. And I do realize they contract out but even so how could you ever admit something that expensive that cannot be fixed at all?
That is what I consider the most amazing part of all of this.

I once worked on a Sony tower. The customer said Sony had been out to fix it three times. Each time they replaced the motherboard. The machine still wasn't working and it was still under warranty. I got called in. First thing I did was to pull unneeded expansion cards. It booted right up. The problem was a bad expansion card.

Why are all these old threads poping up as new ones?
