I have an elderly neighbour and offered to help her sort out her IT. She has a Dell Vostro 430 running Win 10 and said she leaves it on all the time because it is so slow.
It took about 10 minutes to boot up and the CPU cooler was spinning like a buzzsaw. BIOS showed that it had just 2GB RAM so I got it up to 8GB with some old RAM (it actually had 4GB but one wasn't seated properly) which sped it up enough to do some investigation.
The cause of the buzzsaw was the CPU was running at >95C because two of the CPU cooler mounts had broken. I have a CPU cooler for a 1156 CPU but the Dell board has M3 screws not plain holes necessary for the push-in mounts of my cooler. With extra paste on the broken cooler I got the temp down to 75C but it obviously needs a new cooler
    Questions:
The original cooler is part number 033NRX. These seem to be very scarce but there are other Dell units (eg C40V2) that look similar. What other Dell/screw in coolers may be compatible and adequate for a 95W CPU?
Are the screw threads part of the motherboard or are they a back plate that I could remove if I took the MB out, and would this allow a standard 'push fit' cooler to be fitted?

Btw the original cooler has the screw attachments on the corners of a 75mm square

Hello and Welcome and I've never seen a CPU cooler mount break. Back to your question - I don't know what would be compatible. I did search for "033NRX" and found some photos. It looks like there's a plate under the board that the cooler mounts to. So it seems the threads are part ot the plate underneath (as opposed to being part of the board.).

Thanks for this. I thought I tried every possible search term but nothing like that image came up!
The plastic shroud has cracked on the side and two of the screw fixings are detached so there is no clamping. The owner did admit to having 'knocked it over' which could explain the damage!
With the image above, I think I'll be able to get the board out, remove the backplate and fit a standard cooler.

All done. The backplate was stuck on with double sided tape so had to be carefully prised off, but once done, a standard cooler fitted easily.
A happy customer especially as the cooler came off another pc she was getting rid of, so fixed at no cost!

Thanks for the info about the backplate.
