Not quite sure where this goes since I'm unsure of what is even wrong with my computer. So I picked Windows 10 since that's one thing I know about my computer. About 5 days ago my laptops screen would just randomly go black but wouldn't turn off. The only way to make the screen come back on was is to restart the computer. I have dusted on the vents, own a cooling pad, and have my bios and graphics card up to date. This very annoying since I game on my computer and it shuts off randomly during the day. Help is greatly appreciated!

Welcome to the site OceanBreeze100 hope you enjoy you time here.

Does this happen battery only? Battery and Power? or Power only?

While you were using it, it would go black? When you press the power button does it go back to the screen you were on when I does this.

There are some key combos that can put the system to sleep which will make the screen go black. Which you may be pressing with out knowing.

One of my Dells has the sleep/Esc Button and if I pressed Esc it would put the system to sleep. Had to press the Fn+Esc for it to work properly. Yes did correct that had to go into the BIOS.

Do you have a power light or indicator? When the system does this does it flash slowly or fast?

Check you power setting to see if it is putting the system to sleep or power off for what ever reason.

How did you update them. This could be the cause it retrieved from the improper place or version.

Glad to hear it. You may also want to make sure the keyboard is clear of crap as well. Most of the heat is dissipated through there as well. If you have not done it clean the cooling try and what tray sits on. What ever is under it will get blown into the system.

An improper place or version is unlikely since most that game with laptops usually get the drivers from the specific laptop manufacturer since those laptop drivers can sometimes be very specific to the model -- and yet we don't even know the hardware or the model here.

Also since you say you picked windows 10 -- does this mean that it's a brand new model? or that you merely decided to download windows 10 as an update from and older model?

Lots of questions to be answered here but I think most of this mystery can be solved by posting your specifications. Lets start with that. OP what is your specific laptop/model?

My laptop is always on battery since that allows it to be on it's best performance.

Yes the screen would go black but you could see that the backlights were still on meaning the screen and computer hadn't turned off.

I'm pretty sure there are no key combos because last night while just reading on forums it had shut down a total of three times.

The computer does have a power light, one of the cord itself and one on the computer. They don't blink or anything like that when the screen goes blank, they stay the same solid color.

I'm sure the power isn't causing it since the last time I had trouble with power my computer had given me a notice my cord wasn't plugged in all the way.

My bios was updated straight from the Dell website and my graphics card ( NVIDIA Geforce GTX 960M) has an updater downloaded straight on to the computer that allows me to check for updates and know when there are new ones. When this began happening I went to Dell for the Bios update and checked my graphics card for any updates.

With the air I also my sure to do the keyboard, just thought that information wouldn't help so I didn't add it (opps lol).

    Hopefully these answers help!

Since you see that the backlight is on, then the problem may be the screen or the system board. I suggest using an external display. Configure the external display to mirror the laptop screen.

If the laptop screen goes black, and the external screen is still good, then I'd suspect the laptop screen is bad.
If they both go out at the same time, that points to the system board.

I actually do not have access to a external monitor since I'm the only one in the house that owns a computer. My dad is a complete dinosaur and only owns a kindle.

How old is the Dell if still under Warranty call them and get them on it before it come to late.

Yes the answers do help that then tell me that I agree with Tony that there is some thing going on with the screen board.

Does you TV have a connection for PC?

When did you last do this update?

Did you update the one card or both?

Do you have a screen saver active? What time limit?

I'm not sure about our TV, I could always check.

The last time I did a BIOS update was about five days ago after the restore.

I can check if Dell put out a new graphics driver, but I know the NVIDIA is completely up to date.

And no I do not have a screen saver, I made sure that wasn't the problem about two days after it came up.

Have you check you BIOS settings? Why did you update the BIOS? How many times have you updated/flashed the BIOS?

I updated the BIOS because Dell had come out with a new driver and wanted to stay updated on my BIOS. I can check my BIOS settings but I would need to know what to look for. And, since I've had the computer I think it's only needed two BIOS updates.

Look to make sure the BIOS setting are configured for the hardware that is install in your system.

BIOS screens differ form system to system.

    Flashing your motherboards bios.

The motherboard in your computer has a preset series of instructions called a bios (basic input output system) and is a software file that is loaded onto the bios chip. The bios is where you can make changes to overclock your CPU and set certain functions and hardware to be active or disabled.

Periodically you may need to update (flash) the bios to add new functionality, such as compatibility with a new CPU or Ram. Adding a new hard drive , video card and DVD drive will also show up in the bios and checking it to see if the device registered with the bios is a way to confirm it's compatible.

    Note.
It is not necessary to update the bios simply because a newer one is available, you should only update the bios if there is a need to do so.

I'm sure the BIOS was configured for my hardware since I entered my computer model and system on the website to find the BIOS. Also I have updated the Graphics Driver for Dells graphics to also see if that was the problem.

About flashing and overclocking: I've never overclocked this computer and haven't yet on a Windows 10 system. IS

Ok and I would never recommend that you overclock a portable system. When you overclock a system it produces more heat.

Alright, that's what I thought haha. Today the computer has yet to turn off so I'm not sure if it was the driver or it just hasn't done it yet? I'm sort of paranoid that it's just going to keep turning off periodically and get worse over time.

Yes I feel it has. I hasn't done it since so hopefully everything is sound. I do actually have another question to ask. Before I used to own a Toshiba laptop before buying my Dell. My Dell has constant lag spikes as of right now yet my Toshiba never had lag problems with my wifi. I've contacted my network provider, gotten a new modem, got a wifi adapter, and had a tech replace our wires, yet the problem still persist. I was wondering if you knew what could be causing a problem with the wifi? I'm unable to have a wired connection since the TV is connected to the modem along with our phone to the modem in the living room. I'm only about 12 feet away from the modem also.

Then lets hold off for a few days and make sure that it is working correctly before we mark this solved and close it.

For the network issue could you post that question with what type of wireless and security (WEP/WPA), DSL, Satellite, or Cable

    Thanks

Well it did turn off again but only once over the past few days. I was at work and had left it on for only about two hours since I only needed to over someone for around that time limit. When I came come it was blank and of course the only way to make it come back on was to restart it. But, after that it ran smoothly and didn't shut off.

As for my inter network I have Comcast (I didn't choose this, my dad did), I've heard good and bad things about them yet I'm leaning towards bad now that my internet seems to be horrible. As for the WEP and WPA I run WPAWPA2-PSK (TKIP/AES) (at least as what I could see) for both my 2.4 GHz and 5.0 GHz. And just to add I keep my computer on the 5.0GHz only. My phone and my dads kindle stay on the 2.4 GHz.

Have you reset the power setting for windows. Check to make sure the system is not going into hibernate.

For the network issue I have created a new thread and posted it in the Networking section.
