    1. Go to this site https://contacts.google.com/
if you aren't signed in, you will get the signin screen
    2. Move your mouse over a contact; it will be shaded and at the right you will see a star, a pencil and 3 dots.
Click the 3 dots and one of the option is delete.

or, click on the 9 dot matrix in the upper right of your gmail account and click on Contacts. That gets you to your Contacts list.
Then follow step 2 of plodr's post.

Tony, I load gmail in basic html so I never see the 9 dot matrix. (I know, most people don't do it that way.)

Still tryng to delete the numerous unwanted gmail contacts. Finally ended up keeping all but deleting the only one I really wanted. Fortunately I had it on other received emails and put it back again. I will keep trying to get some of the suggestions tonwork. Jus realized lots of letters of alphabet have their own sets of contacts. Many more than I realized existed.

It just occurred to me that I may have Contacts for many or most letters of alphabet, not just the ones I frequently email. I will have to try and delete all of them I suppose. If I ever learn how.
Some of the things listed above do not seem to work. Maybe the contacts are not really there. For example if I click the 9 dots and choose contacts I see no contacts.
