Hi, I have a virus, malware or something called css infospace. It takes over my phone's Internet (explorer, chrome and google). Verizon had me clean my browsing history, and they say it's gone but just not... It is not listed as an app. I also deleted every app I didn't need or recognize and ran Malware. I don't know what else to do on a phone to remove it. I have macafee, I thought I was safe...Has any run into this on their phone? Any suggestions for a novice? Thanks! KC

    Hi Kelly,

First off.... Mobile security is totally different to Windows security and I don't have a lot of experience with this.

    When you say:
    What exactly do you mean?
Is infospace set as your homepage?
Do you use Chrome or the stock android browser?

    Is that all they did?

What was the last app you installed before infospace got a hold.

Have no idea on Mobile McAfee .... I don't like their 'Windows' version so I steered clear of the mobile version.
I have Eset Mobile security + Antivirus installed.

What version of Android are you running? .... and which Samsung phone?
My wife and I, both use Samsung phones ( but different models) and the settings are completely different.

    Hi,
Thank you, any help is appreciated.

I'll get rid of macafee and switch to your recommendation. That's great.

Css infospace takes over the Web browser program. It is not set as my homepage.

I would have never known I had the virus? except the Internet loads so slowly. For example, I try to open google. I can see it go to /ccsinfospace.com first then bring up the browser google. I get different search results, with many ads, unlike when I search for the same item on a non infected Samsung Galaxy Note 5 phone (my sons). The same thing happens with Google chrome and explorer.
I think all 3 browsers were on the phone. I don't know how to download them, so really believe they were already there.

So after I discover this, I called Verizon technical support and they just had me clean my browser. That's it. They said it was gone. But, I can still see it before going on the web. They were no help.

The last app i loaded was macafee!

I think it came from an email in which I signed up for a contest. Yes, I know, I'm an idiot. Bad dog. The damage is done. I promise never to enter a contest again.

My phone is a samsung note 5. SAMSUNG-SM-N920V. Android 5.1.1

There is another post and response on this site about css infospace on a computer. It may be of help in solving the problem. It has a lot of code. I'm lost...thanks for working on this.

Clearing a browser on a computer is a lot easier than on an android phone.
I'm guessing that the infospace settings are still attached to the browser settings.
I can't see that just clearing the browsing history will remove any settings that have been altered.

My phone is a Samsung Note 3 .... hopefully the settings will be very similar.

    Let's try clearing the browsers....

Settings >> General >> Application Manager.
It'll probably open at 'Downloaded'...... scroll across the top until you reach 'All'.
Scroll down to 'Chrome' and click on it.
Click 'Clear Data' and 'Clear Cache'.
Afterwards, repeat the process... but this time scroll down the list until you see 'Internet'.
Click on this and then click 'Clear Data' and 'Clear Cache'.

This should clear the 2 browsers.

    Then to finish off....
Long press on the 'Home' button (center on mine) when the apps in use come up.... click the right hand button (3 lines with an x through them).
This will close all running apps.

Now try the browsers again and see if you still get the same as before.

Like I said, these are the instructions for my Note 3..... hopefully they'll be the same for the Note 5.

First. Thank you. Sorry it has taken me so long to get back to you. I ran into a snag. I tried the plan. I cleared the data and cache for the browsers under applications. Deleting on all browsers worked....the virus was gone, yes! Unfortunately, I restarted my phone and it was back! I spent the night uninstalling the 3 browsers and reinstalling them. That worked too until I restarted the phone... it's back. I'm ready to scream. Maybe, I should just clear the browsers again and never turn it off? Troubling...KC

    Hi Kelly,

So obviously it's hiding away and starting up on the reboot.
I have seen on the internet that people do have a big problem removing this.

At the moment, I see we have 2 choices:

    (a) Try finding it and removing it.
Did you remove McAfee and install Eset?
    If so....
Start Eset, on the main screen click on AntiVirus:

On the next screen change the scan level to Deep.
If it says Quick or Smart... just click this and change it in the menu that comes up.
    Now click on Scan Device.

    Hopefully this will find it.
I've never used the Deep scan so have no idea how long it may take.

If this doesn't work....... plan b

    (b) Reset the phone back to factory settings.
I see a lot of people have done this to get rid of the pest.

Settings >> General >> Backup and Reset >> Factory data reset.

If you decide to do this, I'd recommend backing up your contacts to the memory card ( if fitted) It'll save you having to input them all again afterwards.... you just have to import them back.
I'd also recommend removing the memory card before running the reset.

Thanks. I'll run the deep scan and think good thoughts. I'll let you know. KC

Phoohey... No luck with plan A.
It's still hijacking the web browsers. It's getting worse too. It comes back with a null page if I go to a site it does not like. I can't get to computer help web forums! I'm shut out and down.

So..... I'm on to plan B, your suggestion of the factory reset. Thank you for the directions on how to save my contacts and for all your problem solving efforts.

It was great to have you and this forum to help me. Thanks Starbuck ☆☆☆☆ for volunteering your time and brain to help all of us. My thanks to Dougie too.☆☆☆☆ On to plan B...Take care. KC

I'll let you know, promise. I'm going to have Verizon do it. They tried to walk me through it and it got stuck. Virus or novice troubles? I don't know which. They suggested that I to bring it to a store....l'll keep in touch. KC

    Hello,
Well, Verizon said it can't remove popupui receiver app which is attached to the cssinfospace.com ad clicker browser attacker. They have sent me a new phone. I'm not to restore anything from the verizon cloud except my contacts. So, the news is good and bad. Thanks for your help. I hope not one else encounters this.
    Best wishes.
    KC
