i have a linksys wrt310n router that i am trying to connect to a Uverse 2wire router.
End goal is to connect a Direct TV HDDVR to the linksys (and then to Uverse - and then the net) so that my family and i can get access to the online services/channels.
Seems like a couple pretty simple settings but i am unsure how to allow the uverse router to have the linksys connect.
    Can y'all help?

Are you referring to ATT U-Verse service?

I almost forgot, Welcome to Computer Help Forums! :)

OK the first thing we need to do is get the make and model number of the Modem/Router supplied by ATT. Also you refer to Direct TV. Again, are you referring to "Direct TV" satellite service or a direct connection?

Sorry - and thanks for the welcome as well.
Make of Uverse is 2wire 3600HGV
    DirectTV as in Satelite
I am sure it is a setting in http://192.168.1.254
    on the 2wire router...

Let me see if I have this right. You are a subscriber to both Direct TV and ATT U-Verse Correct?

The ATT is internet only or does it provide TV as well. I believe that the device you refer to is an ASDL Modem and not a wireless router.

Does the Direct TV device have internet capability so that it can connect either wirelessly or by ethernet cable?

If I get this right you want to get internet access from your ISP (ATT) directly to your satellite box??

Finally how fast is this connection from ATT?

Correct - both DTV (for TV) and Uverse for internet only.
The uverse device, 2wire, is a VDSL device.
As far as hooking up the direct tv receiver, it does have an ethernet port - so what i am trying to do is go internet to uverse wirelessly connect to linksys wired connect to Direct tv box. so in a nutshell your comment "internet access to sat box" is correct. i dont want to do it wired (too far from uverse gateway) so trying to go wirelessly.

Please keep in mind that I have no experience with Direct TV at all so I have no idea how it works when connected to the internet

OK so your internet is provided through this VDSL Modem. I actually have no experience with one of those either but from what I understand it is supposed to increase bandwidth and speed way beyond normal DSL or ADSL. I would, however check that you are getting enough downolad speed to make what you are trying to do worth doing. I generally use speedtest.net but there are many ways to get a good idea about speed.

Now to the next issue. I see where you answered me about the ethernet port on the satellite receiver but is it able to accept a wireless signal as well? (wifi enabled) If not does Direct TV offer you one that does?

The first thing you need to do is create a wireless network using the lynksys router. That would be accomplished just as you would any other wireless connection. That means that your computer must have some wireless capability.

After that you will need to add the satellite receiver to the network and then you should be able to use your satellite remote and follow the Direct TV directions.

The key to what you want depends totally on the capability of the receiver. For that you need to Contact Direct TV. If the receiver is not wifi enabled. You will need to ask them whether there is a means of converting it.

If not you should be able to have the router near the receiver and then connect the receiver to the router using the ethernet cable. You must, however set the router first. Lynksys usually provides a set up disk that will do it for you or guide you through it.

Yep. If your computer has a wireless card you need create a wireless network. Without one the router will do you no good at all. Once you have accomplished that and you can connect to the wireless router wirelessly you can then move the router near to the satellite box and reconnect it to the cable. You then need to follow the Direct TV instructions for how to get their box to recognize the network. (It will be the same as it would if connected via cable.) Without a wireless (wifi) network the router is just a paperweight.

ok, i think we are close -
wireless is set up but my laptop connects to the 2wire (uverse box)
what i cant figure out is how to make/allow the linksys connect to the uverse - thats where i am stuck. i am sure its some sort of setting on the 2wire config but that i dont know.

Ok, My mistake I assumed and you know where that gets you.:snckr:

Your U-verse modem is, in fact, also a wireless router as well. What you need to do with your linksys router is to use it as a repeater and not a router. This is the same thing you would do if there were great distances involved. I am not at all positive that this will work again because I don't know what the satellite box requires but this should do it.

I actually found a few guides on how to do it but this one seems like the easiest to follow. I do not vouch for the information or the site but it all seems OK to me. http://www.ehow.com/...s-repeater.html

Once you have it working you should be able to connect the box to the router and add the box to the network using the Direct TV instructions.
