I do not know where this thread might belong but my brother was a victim of computer hacking. Someone called him or something , maybe a message on the PC, asking him to call Microsoft or maybe he GOT a call from what the said was Microsoft. Nw that he has escaped from that , is is safe to be emailng him on his computer or would that put me at risk also? All sorts of bad stuff around these days to fear.

A bit confusing to read ......
Did they call him at his home (phone call)?
Did the message come up on his computer?
Did he actually ring the number or speak to them?

If he didn't actually phone them and speak to them, then he can just chalk it up to experience.
    No harm done.

I talked with him tonight. He said they said they were Microsoft and gave him a number to call them on the phone.

You are OK to email him. That is the Microsoft scam tell him not to talk to them.

No companies like Microsoft, Amazon, Xfinity/Comcast, Paypal will call. Simply hang up if you get a call from someone saying they are calling from one of those companies.

Today I was on computer and suddenly A notice appeared saying my computer was infected with something and I should call a certain Microsoft number to have it cleaned. Since I thought this was a scam of some sort I shut off computer and unplugged the connection cable. Now I decided to start it again. Seems OK now. But I got my first computer in 1998 and have NEVER EVER had anything like this happen before and from what I hear and read it is becoming all too common. How do people like my know or find out what to do to handle things like this. I thought all day and finally decided I should turn it on again to see if it worked. It seems OK now. Any suggestions ? As you said above if I do not call or sign up for anything I can go on using computer if I do not respond. I just do not know how to deal with such happenings. Thanks for any help.

You did exactly what you should have done.

The scam continues because people fall for it. You were smart enough to recognize the scam and got out.

Tried computer at bedtime last night and it seemed OK. Nothing suspicious. Must have done something RIGHT. (Except for forgetting to plug it in when started it this morning).

Note: I usually start my computer in the morning and just close lid when not using it so it goes to sleep. Then I can use it during day without starting and shutting down. Is this an "OK practice"?

Re: plodr above post: my program list shows Malwarebytes but nothing happens when I try to open it.
OOPS ! I was wrong. It shows THIS (see uploaded file). Says there is a free update available. Should I install this?

Because Malwarebytes is doing the protection, those will be turned off.

I turned them on anyway and updated as suggested. The uploaded file tells results. If I need to trn off I may need to know how. But they are not likely to harm anything I would think. I am totally unfamiliar with this.

I found this Help and Support list next to the start menu - see newest upload (Help and Support). Help and Support 2023-07-19_125358.jpg
