Computer crashed during install... Windows Explorer now crashes.

On October 14 I installed 17 updates and my computer crashed near the end of
the install process. Once I had my computer rebooted, it showed none of the
updates as having been installed. Later that day, I believe they
automatically installed, and since then windows explorer will lock up and
force me to shut down my computer around 1-2 times a day.

When I went back and checked the Windows Update History I noticed a few
duplicates, and sure enough 15 of the 17 updates that initially didn't show
up as having been installed on the 14th were now there, as well as duplicate
files installed on the 15th. All of the installs show up as successful, but
I'm wondering if the duplicate updates may be the reason for my numerous
crashes.

The updates that were double installed are:
KB975517, KB973525, KB974571, KB974234, KB970892, KB974810, KB974455,
KB972581, KB973709, KB974470, KB974306, KB905866, KB971486, KB890830, and
KB975467

Any tips for what I can do that don't involve System Restore (It would be
out of date because my university requires us to shut it off in order to
connect to the network, not sure why) or restarting from scratch?

Sorry about that, totally forgot. I'm running Windows Vista and Service Pack
2.

I understand that there's a good chance you might not be able to help me
with this scenario but I figured I'd check first before backing up my data
and looking to fix it on my own. Thanks for any tips you may have.

NP, Brian. Thanks for providing the info. Let's think positive here and
maybe we can get this resolved.
Which firewall is being used ... is it a 3rd party firewall or the
native Vista one ?

If it's a 3rd party firewall, the issue may simply be caused by changes
made to IE's files when the Cumulative Security Update was installed and
the firewall no longer recognizes IE as a permitted executable that can
access the net. That would be update KB974455.
You would then have to open the firewall's configuration or Options and
ensure that updated IE is allowed through.

Or, the ActiveX killbits update for IE many be causing the issue with a
plugin or add ons.

See:
Try " Step 3: Start Internet Explorer in "No Add-ons" mode " and see if
the issue appears.

Or, you could uninstall the IE Cum Sec Update (KB974455), reboot, and
see if the issue goes buh-bye.
Same for the ActiveX killbits update, KB926449.

And, you could uninstall any of the other updates that are even remotely
related to IE and see if that resolves the IE locking issue. That would
include any Office product that adds *anything* to IE, such as an
icon/toolbar/etc.

EX: To see the KB article for KB974455, you'd just add the number
without the KB
