    Hi Ron,

When was the last time the tower was cleaned? I would take a can of compressed air and throughly blow out the inside
of the case. The most common reasons a computer will constantly reboot are usually from heat, a weak power supply or a
    failing or corrupted hard drive.

Just after I picked it up and before I hooked it up, I cleaned the Blower Fan and the Fin's behind the Fan. But after my Board Meeting this morning, I will put it on the Bench and blow it out completely.

Seems to be running cool, I feel the air coming out and it's not 'hot'..I Weak Power Supply I can see. The Hard Drive possible, but I don't hear any noises, or 'beeps' coming from the HD..

Thanks and I will get back to you on this later..

PS. I pulled the plug last night, this morning I plugged it back in, and so far it hasn't booted itself..

Odd sounds are one sign of a failing HDD but only one. Sometimes they do not show you the courtesy. Do you have any imaging software? Has the data been backed up? That may be a good idea before we do too much fiddling.

    Hi Ron,

Signs of a failing hard drive can also show up as freezing, stuttering or low performance. I agree with Barry,
before doing anything else, I would clone or image the hard drive as a precaution.
It might be a good idea to run a disk check first and foremost. Type cmd into the run box and click okay. In
the command line, type or copy and paste the following, chkdsk /r (note the space between the k and the
forward slash) and press the enter key.

You may see the following message ...

"Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Would you like to schedule this volume to
be checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N)"
Type Y, and then press ENTER to schedule the disk check, and then restart your computer to start the disk check.

I put the machine on the bench, took the can of compressed air, and cleaned the entire insides of the tower. Use the vacuum to finish off the job. Installed the computer, Booted it up, shut it down after a short period. It rebooted immediately..

Now I will follow your advice and do a chkdsk/r

Next thing is. How do I clone the Hard Drive, or should I replace the Hard Drive and install the O/S with the Win.XP Disc..

I think it could be something as simple as some setting in power options that hasn't had the Appy box clicked.

Regardless of what's showing, unless the apply box is clicked before OK,then the settings don't change.

I would highlight all the selections again and click apply, then OK.

    Worth checking again.IMO.

From what I am reading the computer is not rebooting on Startup but rebooting up to  40 mins after turning it off.

OK I reset all the Power options once more.. One thing I notice is. (UPS Service is currently stopped)..Just what is this UPS Service..

Please Note: I made changes then applied them back so the Apply button was highlighted. Then Click Apply and click OK..So the Power should be set now..

Did the chkdsk, not sure if anything changed or not.. But I've had four to six freeze ups trying to get going after this.. I found you have to let this computer come on fully, no clicking anything during boot up till all have loaded.

Now about Cloning, should I Clone or Image the Hard Drive, and do I save it to a disc, or where else would I save it to.
I have never Cloned a Hard Drive before, and to transfer to the New Hard Drive, I'm lost on this. Will need a Tutorial or some good advice on this.

    Hi Ron,

I'm sorry it took so long for my reply, I was on a house call. Before we go any further please open the Event Viewer
and click on Systems log to find and view the critical stop errors that occur when the computer restarts. Kindly
copy and paste them in your reply.

    Thank you, Cindy

It stands for Uninterupted Power Supply and regulates the voltage to your computer. Most, if not all manufacturers
computers do not have the UPS. They are listed as stopped by default.

Ron, are you saying the computer was shut down and (rebooted) started itself while off?
It will take some time for me to go through your log. Please bear with me.

Correct Cindy. I shut the computer down and watch it, in about half an hour, it's rebooting itself on..Even with all the work we have done, the main problem is still going on.. But the computer is running much better..

    Ron..

There is nothing to apologize for. I too am waiting for Cindy to follow up on this and I know she will. I also know she has had some serious ISP problems and that she had something prepared. I will try to contact her.

Hi Ron.There a couple of more things worth checking,IMO.

Enter the Bios, normally (F2 or Delete button on startup) and have a look under Power Management or similar.

Make sure the wake on lan or wake on ring is disabled.

Because your Computer starts by itself at different times, makes me think a phone or Fax activation can restart your Computer.

Also in the Registry, find the key " Powerdown after Shutdown" This has to be set to "1"

    Here is the Path.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ Microsoft\WindowsNT\Current Version\WinLogon

Set Value to "1" and restart your Computer.

There are many things Ron that can cause your problem and process of elimination.

Down to faulty Power Supply, Faulty MOBO, faulty Start Button, however check what I suggested first.

My only other thought at this time,is the possiblity you may have a Virus hidden in your Registry that hasn't been picked up yet,

which can restart your Computer at random.

Check the first 2 and get back to us. :)

If you need help in the Bios or the Registry,  there are experts here to guide you.

    I am not a Techy,just learn a bit here and there,and read a lot.

Just in case, if you are going to make a registry change it is always a good idea to create a backup first. You do that in system restore. The following directions apply.

Manual steps to back up the registry in in Windows XP
    1. Click Start, click Run, type %SystemRoot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe, and then click OK.
    2. On the Welcome to System Restore page, click Create a restore point, and then click Next .
    3. On the Create a Restore Point page, type a name for the restore point and then click Create
    4. After the restore point has been created, click Close.
Note If System Restore is turned off, you receive a message that asks whether you want to turn on System Restore now. Click Yes. Then, in the System Properties dialog box, click to clear the Turn off System Restore check box, click OK, and then repeat this step.

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322756

After that you can safely make the changes. That being said, DSTM has given you a full path so you can always retrace your steps.
