When i open my volume control from the task bar its muted, when i unmute it sets the volume to 0%, then when i try adjusting the volume it automatically mutes it. The account I'm using doesn't have access to the control panel, when I log into the administrator account and adjust the volume it does the same thing. I've checked the drivers and there are no problems

Hi Brad. Welcome to Computer Help Forums.
I have never had Linux so flying blind here.
Does your sound applet look like this?

I have virtually no experience with it either, its actually a work computer that can't be hooked up to the internet so screenshots are a no go. Using the basic account (which has the problem) I can't access the soundboard only the basic volume adjustment.

If this is a work Computer I think the Company IT should be sorting out any issues.

I have a few questions for you?
    1. is this a linux based system as it says in your profile?
    2. Who set up the Operating system.
    3. Are you referring to the Windows control panel?
    4. Is there a problem with your internet connection or is it just disabled in that work machine?

I apalogize, it has a windows xp operating system. The internet is disabled on it for security purposes, and from the basic user account the windows control panel can not be accessed, what it can access is very limited.

I think this Computer needs the IT person that locked it to unlock it.
You would need the Log in Password to gain Admin control.

If you can go into your device manager you can check if there are any warnings next to the sound devices. There is always the possibility of there being a hardware issue. Since there is no internet access available it will be difficult for you to find and install any missing or corrupted drivers. Frankly, I do not see it as good policy on our part to help you get access and make changes to a machine that you don't own and is managed by an IT person.

Trying to help you gain access to areas where you are restricted is much the same as helping you to bypass a password protected computer.

I'm sorry if I have been unclear, i do have total access to the computer, I'm not trying to bypass anything. I've checked the Device manager and there is nothing wrong with any of the hardware.

Hi Brad, I have been reading this thread with interest, and as keen as we all are at CHF to help our members, it has to be said that because the computer in question is in your work place and as has already been stated in previous posts, you really should speak to the person who manages your IT department.

It would reflect badly on CHF if we where to give advice that enabled you to over ride the security that your company has set in place.

While I agree with Franks (an my own) last post. You do say that you have access to the Administrator account. Does that allow you to access the internet? What process did you use to get to the "Administrator account? Perhaps we are missing something?
