I have been notified that I can trade my present modem for the new ARRIS modem combo wi-fi modem. Is this a true router in the modem? I would like to buy my own modem and stop the monthly rental. Any suggestions on the best one to get that is a DOCSIS 3 modem approved on the Comcast network? Also I would not mind a new router to go with it so any suggestions there too?
    Thanks

I think purchasing is less expensive than renting these devices. Do you really need the increased bandwidth of a DOCSIS3 modem? DOCSIS2 is 42 MBPS. That's pretty good for most users. My sister has a DOCSIS2 modem and an old router/wireless access point. She gets Comcast TV in 3 rooms and accesses the Internet wirelessly on her computer. No issues.

They say for today's higher speeds Tony you need doxcis3 and Dizz may well be paying for that.
I have seen that modem/router in the field and the installers say it really poor quality BTW.
Personally I think you would be better off buying their modem as opposed to modem router and using your own router because the range will be much betterand
I know you will buy a quality router and that is always preferable. As long as you are not using a modem that also has telephone service you can buy them at Worst Buy or Staples
as well as from Comcrap by making sure they are for Comcast service. Of course you have to call Comcast and advise them you are changing the modem as they have to allow it into their system.

OK I was going that route can anyone recommend a high performance router mine is several years old Netgear and I have lost the pulse on the new routers out there!

To date I have not used WI-FI capabilities but am in the market for a TABLET or basic laptop and want a secure router with a good signal.

I've had good luck with basic Netgear routers.

I have had bad luck with all of them especially for wireless. Ever since Linksys was bought by Belking which zero'd them out there has been a dearth of wireless routers worth owning in
my estimation. I have gone to Cisco Small Business which is pricey but they are the only ones I see that have a great signal even 2 years later whereas the others all drop in half in a year.
This is what I have had for 2 years and the wireless signal is the same as it was new:

The modem-router combo from Comcast is pretty good. I recently installed a few of them for customers.

One such customer had a Netgear router that he wanted to use. The area he is in has about 20 WiFi signals at any given time.

With the Netgear I couldn't even get a connection in the living room of his two bedroom condo. I noticed a Comcast router broadcast

in the area and decided to test the signal. This signal is coming from a different tenant. The Comcast router was stronger and more

reliable then the Netgear he had purchased. I never would have thought it to be true but the Comcast modem-router is serving him

well. One thing to note is the new models do allow others to connect to your WiFi and use your internet connection by default.

This is a new service that Comcast is trying out which allows people to purchase time cards or a free trial on your connection.

The only way I have found to disable it is to disable the wireless portion of the router. It broadcasts the signal by default.

I have the same Comcast modem/router and I agree. The signal is great.
You can turn off the Comcast Hotspot by signing in to your Comcast account.
Under settings there is a disable tab for the hotspot. I did that right away as soon as I found out about it.

Click Users & Preferences >Service Address, which will have your address.
Underneath your address click Manage Xfinity WiFi.
Click Disable Xfinity Wifi Home Hotspot. Click Save.

I think the problem is that Netgear routers "bring-it" in my experience degrade about half the wireless signal within 2 years
as do other poor quality routers and it isn't fair to compare a well used router with a brand new one from anywhere. My info came from about 3
Comcast linemen who bitched like crazy about the Arris modem and said it is junk. If you are choosing between an old Netgear and new Arris there is no contest.
If you compare either to my Cisco Small Biz router, I can get my signal 2 blocks away in the same house where the 1 year old Arris modem from Comcast is way weaker new than mine from 2 blocks away 2 years old. Quality is quality I'm afraid..

I don't know, Rich. I've had mine for over three years and it's still performing flawlessly.

Cindy, You can't possibly have the same one as it has only been out about a year.

Maybe in your area but that's the one that I have and I've had it for well over three years now.

Well that could be as we only got it within the last year and where you are you are more likely to see newer hardware tested.

The Netgear I was testing was brand new and one of the high end models, so age was not a factor. I don't know which one is actually better as far as a router. To be honest I would trust the Netgear more, but as far as working in a crowded wireless environment the Comcast router wins hands down.

I actually have a Comcast modem/router but I use the Cisco Router for all wireless transmission. I have trouble getting the Comcast router wireless downstairs and as I said and the Cisco I can pick up 2 blocks away. For me no comparison but my Comcast router is not the one we are discussing.
