Since begnning computers in Nov 1998 I have had 4 desktops and 3 Laptops. My current laptop is a Dell Inspiron 5040 with windos 7 Home Premium SP-1. I also have a Windows XP laptop. My wife has a Windows 10 laptop and we no longer use the older Windows 98 desktops but are afraid to dispose of them for fear of what personal info might be retrievable. I used to do cleaning operations on the desktops like clean hard drive etc but with the laptops for some reason have not. Mybe the mdern computers do no not need it or maybe i just did not think of it. I was wondering if there is still a series of cleanings that could or should be done regularly with laptops. and what they might be and how to do them. Just thuught I would ask. Any tips or advice? Thanks.

Desktops, laptops - they're the same. Laptops are just smaller versions of desktops. So why do you say you can't clean laptops?

If you fear personal data being compromised, remove the hard drive from the computer. No reason you can't remove a hard drive from a laptop.

    I've still got a Win98 desktop :)
It doesn't access the internet anymore, but I store all my music on it and connect it up to a good set of speakers.
Hundreds and hundreds of tracks on there ...... system is still useful :jump:

Tony re laptops. I did not mean to say they cannot be cleaned but just forgotten how to do most of it. Last time was on the desktops where I would clean cookies, hard drive and whatever it gave me choices of. Also the computer forums were full of info about what and when to do. Did not mean to mislead.
I do not feel like I have the time and interest to diassemble and figure out where hard drive is and how to remove it yet am afraid in case even though careful I have no idea of what info might be on these desktops and what someone could do to harm me.

Take the time now while you can. If something happens to you and someone takes the computers and/or laptops to be e-cycled, then who knows what info will be harvested and by whom!

My husband is a non-techie but he knows how to remove and destroy hard drives. Not only did we do this when we e-cycled 8 of our earlier computers/laptops but we also removed the hard drives in over a dozen computers for an organization we are on the board of. (Those hard drives we did not destry; we handed them over for them to deal with. We simply took the cases, mice, keyboards and some monitors to be e-cycled.)

Are there any tutorials that show how to locate the hard drives in older Compaq desktops or newer Gateway and Do not use the ell laptops? I have 3 windows 98 Compaq, an HP Vectra desktop, and a Gateway laptop. Do not use the desktops although they work but most always use the Dell laptop. Never kept much of anything on them I would consider extremely dangeroud or harmful. But the I do not really know what computer thieves would find useful.
