Sticks her size two shoe in(small feet I know)

Is it possible to look into something like a Flash Chatroom?

There for you can then make several rooms.

One for staff needing a password.

One for members and make a few for Tech help.

Moving a member to a Tech help room would be much easier than trying to read through loads of text from other members. This can give direct help to members on a one to one setting.

I sugest at least one Mod be in the room were possible to check on conversations and peoples behaviour.

Stuck size two in pritty well me thinks?

Seems like a good concept. It is one of those things that if we do it we will want to do it well!

It would need to be setup correctly and moderated properly.

Otherwise we could have idiots running riots.

    Rooms.

    STAFF.Passworded.
    General.
    Tech help rooms.

What this would require is commitment and enough people to actually be around to moderate. That would be my only worry that there is a lot of time zone gaps. This is worthy of discussion though!

Never been in a Chat Room environment.
I take it, that it would be a closed room, unless you had a Password,to gain access.
    Is that right?

For one use the potty mouth filter for the blocking of usage of swearing.

    Set that correctly.

Ok at the moment it cannot be moderated fully but it could be a test run and see how it goes.

If it can be moded as much as can be and hope for the best.

Flash chat written text can be saved and read by admin and staff to check what is being done and said in the rooms.

Once site gets busier and more staff aquired then we can look to moded even more.

I've seen this done before using an IRC chat client, it can work really well, but it does need a commitment from staff and members to be there when on line ;)

Dirty Polo mentioned something somewhere about it, been waiting for him to come back with more info :)

I had an IRC server setup on Xtreme Visual Basic Talk - Powered by vBulletin when I owned it. In the beginning it was used and was well moderated. What happened though is users came in an demanded help right now if the post in the forum wasn't answered right away. This made staff gradually leave the chatrooms we had set up. In the end no one from staff was moderating it.

I wouldn't be adverse to the idea of setting up chat. I wouldn't go with IRC this time. Maybe something like flashchat as a trial to see how it goes.

well I know how its done with IRC, But like I said and like bob has said, that may not be the best way to go,

also as Bob has said the last time he tried it, he ended up with people demanding immediate attention, and staff getting annoyed with it,

also it can have the effect of removing content from the boards, that is needed to keep Search Engines interested and the site high up the lists

that said I do believe that it does have benefits for staff and members to communicate in a real time environment

But (you new the But was coming) I do think that it would be an advantage to limit who has access to it, in the way of

    a. A minimum post limit

    or

    b. By Staff invitation

    or

    c. Both the above

this said their may not be this option depending on what client is used, unless the access point to it is placed in a Live Chat Room and then use individual forum permissions to limit access, but then again you may or may not think limiting access is a good thing

But the one thing I am certain about is that we give it a try

If you are talking about a voice activated chat allowing for text as well, wouldn't it make more sense to have
it set up for certain days and/or nights within a specific time frame? I fully realize that a record of the
text chat is logged but in a way it seems as if it defeats the purpose of the board itself.

When a member posts a specific problem and receives a solution to the problem, it is on the board itself. It
places that particular issue, the resolution to the problem and Computer Help Forums is not just picked up
by the search machines but it in every way possible helps the board to grow and constantly attract new members....

We all know how frustrating it is to have issues with a computer. Everyone that seeks help would love an immediate
resolution or at least an immediate response to the problem. :)[IMG] :)

A slight idea here, not sure if it is even possible but just thinking after reading Match's post.

How about each adviser/tech or anyone that wishes to have one, get's their own little "room" or somehting, (I'm not yet sure what it would be called.) But then when they sign onto CHF, they can then open their "room" or whatever to let membersw know that there is a place to chat with that particular individual person if they wish.

Does that make sense? Not sure if it's possible but sounded good in my mind :D

Good idea in theory - practically may make it a different matter - we cant have someone here 24/7 even though we cover most time zones may mean we have an eternity of spam to deal with when one of us returns

If we do anything it would have to be limited to registered members and perhaps have their initial participation monitored or have a post limit before they can participate.

Bee that is down to staff. We all just input our ideas and hopefully come to a solution.

I agree with Flash as a trial.

However I do not hink the chat should be used for full Tech support.

I think members should still make a thread and help given on the thread.

I think the chat should be general chit chat but also support given in how to get a download to to run or a scanner. It should be only used to give a a small amount of help or you will find we are stuck in the chatroom giving fixes and the forum gets left behind.

Some one pops in and says help me how do I run HJT?

We give them link on download and help them install and get results all help then is kept in the thread only.

Or they popin and say how to I attach a file, either give the link on how to or explain it in chat.

Chatroom not to be used for full time Tech support.
