I loaded up an older machine with Linux Mint 18.1 Cinnamon 32-bit.

When the screensaver is invoked, I'm unable to get back in using my password.

I put my password in and use the Enter key. Nothing happens.
I put my password in and click on the lock icon. Nothing happens.

I click on the UserAccounts icon and I'm taken to a screen that seems to be the same as when I boot the machine. I click on my account and enter my password and I get in.

    Refer to the attached photo.

Why can't I get into the machine by using my password after the screensaver comes up?

There may be an update that is missing.

When you do not use the screen saver and allow the system to just sleep it allows you in?

Is it just a specific screen saver or any one?

Dual boot and if so with what?

    What Kernel are you running?

What is the display and which drivers did you use?
Been reading that the NVIDIA is giving this issue. Once they switched to the open sourced it corrected it for some.

You might also want to install a newer version of Mint.

Haven't tried that yet. Looking thru the settings via what looks similar to Windows' Control Panel, I'm wondering if it's the ScreenSaver or if it's being suspended. I think it's the ScreenSaver. If you look at the photo I took, I see the time being displayed on the black screen. To test, I set ScreenSaver to Never. In Power Management I set it to Never turn off the screen and Suspend when inactive for 5 minutes. Now for the test......

Nothing specific, just what came along with the installation.

Single hard drive. Wiped it clean and installed Linux. That's all I've done.

    4.4.0-53-generic

System info says Intel Corporation 82Q35 Express Integrated Graphics Controller. I have no idea about the driver and no idea how to determine that. I just loaded this machine from a CD that I burned some time ago.

It's a Dell OPtiplex 755 which originally came with XP Pro. Just trying to make some use out of it.

So, it looks like it goes into Suspend. I left it alone; came back and have the same screen as I got in post #1. I entered my password. Pressed Enter. Nothing happened. Clicked on the padlock. Nothing happened.

Note: If I don't put anything in the password box and click on the padlock, it shows "Please enter your password..." in the password box. If I press the Enter key, nothing happens. Looks it wants the user to click on the padlock instead of the Enter key.

I just noticed, in the upper right corner there's a white number 3 and a black exclamation mark in a white square box. What in the world is that? Guess I have to take a course on this.

I can get back to my desktop by clicking the accounts button which brings up a screen with my user name. If there were more users on this machine, I assume they would also be listed. I click on my user name, enter the password and I'm on my desktop.

    Have you checked the updates?

never seen that one wold like to know the answer myself.

    Found this/these and interesting read
    https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=236138
    https://unix.stackexchange.com/ques...-to-frozen-lock-screen-linux-mint-cinnamon-18

One of them does state to create a test user to see if the issue replicates.

Other places I have read stated that Cinnamon may be to demanding on the system and to try a less demanding desktop environment.

Thanks for that link. I wasn't crazy; it wasn't just me. Windows isn't the only OS with problems coming out of sleep.

The thread posted a work around.
