A few days ago I downloaded and installed about 30 windows updates...it restarted and was never the same...startup repair just comes on after the the bootup screen and cannot repair the computer automatically...i tried F8 after the splash screen and tried all of the safe modes, and last good configuration known...i also tried a few command prompts and wont do anything because it says the computer it already running a repair, cancel it and try again..i do and it just says the same thing...i tried system restore on just about every restore point it shows and says the system was not restored because of an unspecified error

im hoping I dont have to do a full reinstall, any suggestion before I do this?

heres the error it gives me:

    Hi Pentheon.Welcome to CHF.

I would attempt a Startup Repair first, if you have the Vista Install Disc.

    1. Insert the Windows Vista installation disc into the disc drive, and then start the computer.

    2. Press a key when the message indicating "Press any key to boot from CD or DVD …". appears.

    3. Select a language, a time and currency, and a keyboard or input method, and then click Next.

    4. Click Repair your computer.

    5. In the System Recovery Options dialog box, choose the drive of your Windows installation and click Next.

    6. At the System Recovery Options Dialog Box, click on Repair your computer.

    7. Click the operating system that you want to repair, and then click Next.

    8. In the System Recovery Options dialog box, click Startup Repair.

I dont have the vista installation disk. I bought the computer with it installed already and no disks came in the box. I found a tutorial to make a free recovery disk and tried the startup repair from there but did not work

You will need to make a Bootable CD.

    Download from Major Geeks.

You need to be certain that the CD Drive is first in the boot sequence.

OK put your CD in and reboot your Computer immediately.

It should boot up this time off the CD.

Hi Penthion, we are seeking more advice from our Senior Techs. I am a bit confused though by your initial post. What confuses me is that you can't boot into windows but yet you say you tried all restore points, etc. How did you reach system restore without booting all the way into windows (or at least safe mode.) Sorry if I am coming into this late so perhaps I am missing something obvious in the posts.

I'm not at all sure of what the problem here is but may I ask...What is the make and model of your computer?

Are you trying to use FreeDOS and parted magic to boot an ISO to install the OS?

Ive been posting on my laptop, correct I cannot get into windows at all...I just keep tapping F* at the splash screen and tried the safe modes which didnt work. Startup repair will automatically come up basically everytime I boot up without a cd or hitting F8, F2, etc. After the startup repair is finished and cannot fix the computer automatically, theres 2 links I can click on and brings up other options. System restore is on that list but theres always an error when I try one of the later dates.

    Couple of things :-

You do have a DVD drive and not just a CD drive yes?

Vista and W7 are too big for CDs

When you go into the BIOS there are tabs at the top, you need to find the tab that relates to the Boot sequence also called boot device priority
    Standard they are set to:-
    1st Floppy
    2nd CD/DVDROM
    3rd HDD
4th other removable media (some also have network boot, more common on server boards)

You need to ENSURE that the first boot device is the optical drive (cd/dvd) this will ensure that the HDD does not get a chance to try and boot the HDD
