I have a Sony VIAO laptop. The computer was recently returned to me after being repaired at the Sony repair center but now I'm unable to connect to my home network. When I try it can't connect. When I diagnose the problem I am told that the connection was cancelled and that "this might be due to timeout or user action." I have no idea what this means. All the other laptops in my home can connect to the network just fine and I used to be able to connect to the network as well. I reset the router but that did not correct the problem. My router is a NetGear RangeMax WPN824 v2. Anyone have any idea what the problem might be or how to correct it? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Do you know how to access the network connection properties? If so have you checked the IP settings. If you do not know what I am talking about that is OK just let me know. :)

No I do not know how to access the properties. How would I go about doing that? Thanks!

Ok please keep in mind that I do not have vista in front of me but there is little difference in this case. Right click on the little icon down near the clock in the lower right corner (the one that looks like a monitor)

Then click on "open network connections" Are there any red Xs?

If not then right click on your wireless connection and open the "properties" from the drop down menu.

When that opens you will see a number of things one is "Internet protocol" TCP/IP open that.

Make sure that all the boxes are grayed out and that "Obtain a an IP address automatically"is selected do the same below for the DNS server and let me know what you have found.

I followed your instructions and both are set to "Obtain IP Address Automatically."

Just to be certain that nothing was lost during the outside repair I would suggest that you uninstall the netgear router and then reinstall with the software provided. This assumes that the notebook worked before.

The router is installed on a desktop, not on my laptop. I do not have the actual software/CD necessary to install it. I set it up using the remote manual instructions I found online.

What more than likely happened is it can't connect because you haven't set the authentication method up in wireless connections properties.

    Open network and connection center.
Click setup a new network connection.
    Click connect to the internet.

It should find you wireless router connection. Then you'll have to set it up with user name and password that is defined in your router.

When you sent it in for service they lost your connection that you previously set up.
