For the past few days, I've only been able to open browser windows in safe mode. If I try in normal mode, the icon highlights for a few seconds then fades away without opening a window. I can't even get a Windows Explorer window to open, actually. Does anyone know what might be going on here? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Mars, and welcome to Computer Help Forums.

Without anymore details, my first guess would be that you have some sort of malware on your computer. If that is the case, then I would suggest downloading and installing Malwarebytes-Antimalware. See the link below.

    http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free/

Be sure to choose the free version from the page I have linked to, and as always when downloading and installing software...Read the small print and uncheck any boxes that are offering free browsers or toolbars, etc.

You will of course have to download and then run Mbam in Safe mode with networking. Please post back here with your findings. Depending on what you find, we may well then put you in the hands of one of our malware experts.

I've removed your other thread, to avoid confusion ;)

P.S. Welcome to Computer Help Forums, and I understand the second duplicate thread may not have been intentional ;)

Thanks for the response! I ran Malwarebytes, and now I can only open in safe mode - normal mode simply will not load anymore. It gets stuck on the welcome screen. Not sure how running it could have made things worse!

Could you tell us please if Mbam found anything when you ran the scan?

Yes, it did. It found two things, but I can't remember the exact names - one of them was Trogan-something or other.

By any chance could it have been Trojan Downloader? If so I whould suggest that this thread be moved to the malware area, especially if it was Trojan Dounloader Agent. MBAM usually does a good job with this but there are always new varients.

You say that you ran MBAM but don't name an actual anti virus package along with that. What actual AV are you running and have you scanned with that? Also, with MBAM, did you do a Quick scan or Full?

Jay has already said it. Now is the time to move this thread over to the malware guys. I'll do just that now.

    Hi Mars,

PseFrank asked me to help you since Malwarebytes' found something in the scan. I'm a malware removal specialist. To start, please follow the instructions at this link and post the requested logs in a reply tot his thread.

Then, I'll take a look. Just run it all in Safe Mode since you can't boot into Normal mode. Also, what screen is Windows getting stuck on when you boot? The Windows Logo? A log-in screen? Other? Please let me know.
