Silly question but I am not sure. Bought printer 3-15-2015. Didnt think I had printed very much. Last night tried printing but would not print. Today I tried test page. Does not print but has message in window: open front cover, replace toner cartridge, replace toner. Have not really studied machine and always fine. Now I have issue so am looking. Dont think this message there before. Do I simply believe it and replace toner cartridge and toner? If so, not sure I understand toner and toner cartridge. Is this same thing as a ribbon, or a ink cartridge in an ink jet printer? To me I get the idea it is out of ink or ribbon or whatever and I need to get new. But dont really know the terminology. Have not done my homework.
While I am trying to figure out how to change the toner cartridge can someone briefly clarify the terms and if this is the indicated fix? Thanks.
Learning: Found some youtube videos. I guess it is called a laser printer?

Considering it is a Laser printer the yes the toner cartridge probably need to be replaced.

You may also want to open the printer and blow the family of dust bunnies out.

Does drum ever need replacing? Do not have either a toner cartridge or a drum. If need one or both, where is a good source to purchase. Actually I see I purchased 1-20-2015 at NewEgg. Just set it up, started using, and never thought about it much until now-always worked fine. No idea how long or many pages toner cartridges last. Drum was preinstalled but I guess I installed the initial tone cartridge.

Best place to purchase would be the manufacture.

One of the realities of new printers is they often come with starter ink cartridges that have just enough ink to get you started. Brother is one company that come to mind.

Could also be telling BG to actually "open front cover, replace toner cartridge, replace toner."
    Can't print without Toner.

OK: Tony: I checked doors and cartridge position and tried test page on W7 laptop. Test page printed. Then tried the XP laptop again and this time test page printed. Loose door or cartridge likely at fault.
However message still says replace toner.
Found how to check parts life from Brother site. Toner life says 0000000000. Drum life says 98%.
    Indicates toner does need replacing.
Bill: you are right. The website confirms starter tone likely contains less than full supply of ink.
So need to get a toner. Feel better getting it from Brother.
Thanks for info. Learned a lot today. Thanks.

Is Walmart.com $39.24 free shipping a good idea?

Safer from Brother. Lots of places sell toner carts. advertised as "Genuine" that are really Brother Carts. that have been refilled. That's why lots of stores want you to return your used one.

UPDATE: Got new toner cartridge from Brother online store. Printed about 100 pages with original. Still tells me to replace toner but still printing with old as long as I can until it quits. Is it OK to do this? Get as much as I can before replacing? Will it just stop printing with no harm to machine?

Yes, it's fine BGBG. You can use it until it runs out. No harm.

Keep printing as Cindy said. I believe Brother just does a page count to see when the toner is low. They don't actually measure how much toner is left. Eventually you'll see a decrease in print quality. That's when to change the cartridge.
