I have an old Acronis True Image 9.0 I used for backup. Also have newer free Macrium I used twice but dont fully understand. Is it still OK to keep using the Acronis or is it more recommended to use the Macrium Reflect instead? The macrium version is 5.2 but there is newer available-537290. We are talking PCs 98se, XP and 7. One or the other might be better for certain PC? About ready to create a backup image and wondered which to use.

Hi @BGBG I have been using Macrium Reflect sense it was released. I have used it on XP and W7. It has saved me many times from having to go back to factory.
What is there that you don't understand. I would be glad to help you. You can start here. There are tutorials and video's here.

You probably cannot use Macrium on Windows 98 so you would have to use SAcronis there but I would use the newer Macrium on XP and 7 but again download the newest version BG and remake rescue disks as well for Windows 7. You are always better off using the newest version because of Windows updates. You need Windows Updates to keep pc safe but often times in doing so the updates change the OS and then create issues with backup image files.

Silly but I just never got around to using it except to try it out the first time. I did download version 5.3.7290 tonight though and plan to study up on it. Likely will need to use the Acronis on older PCs though. Will look at tutorials.

Macrium is actually much simpler BG than Acronis as it just does the basics of making an image file and cloning a drive.

I know Rich is favoring Macrium. I just need to chime in here. I've been using Acronis True Image for at least 5 years. I've made numerous images and have also restored those images. I don't think I ever had an issue.

Macrium may be as capable as True Image, but until there's an issue, I'm sticking with what works.

Disclaimer: I only use True Image by booting to its Rescue Disk. I haven't tried using the installed application to do a backup.

No problem Tony, when you have a hard drive disabled by Acronis and a Windows 8 install killed causing a reinstall from "soup to nuts" you too may change your mind. The tech community is more for Macrium these days for one thing because of the Windows 8 issues seeing Linux and the fact that Macrium is the only one producing a Windows Rescue Disk that made it the only one that would work at all in Windows 8 and 8.1 for almost a year. It is simple it makes image files and clones drives. But it is personal and each to their own.

Good point there. I haven't needed to image a Windows 8 machine yet. So I haven't faced that hurdle.

Thank you, Cindy, and others. Just wanted to be sure wasn't doing something bad in not registering it.

Just for the record, I also use Macrium for both images and clones. In fact my backup system is two hard drives with recently made clones on both, as it makes it quicker to slip in the clone and your back up and running in a much shorter time than it takes to install an image.
I do now and then put an image onto the external as the third backup, but nothing like as often as refreshing the clones.

You know I am very friendly with the ex Marketing Manager of Acronis and for those of you who join us on Paltalk that is Stephen and he was there through the rise and we both feel let go for the fall from grace. Several times in the past few years they have first called him back to help in a panic and then tried to get him back which he didn't want to do because we both can see the signs of that company falling from grace and personally I think it is because they are all over the place with their software and not concentrating on the core reasons people use it. All the categories added and the Secure one and the online backup just dilutes the software program I feel.
I was involved in the new design about 5 versions back when they began to add functions as I had been hammering them to add file and data backup. But what they did was not what I was looking for and that was take the same program and add a few icons so you could add files and data. I wanted a separate program with the features of a file and data backup in the background much like Power Quest's Drive Image had Datakeeper before Symantec bought PQ and destroyed their products.
