Backup failure 0x80070002

    Hi group,

I cannot make a backup with Vista Home Premium 32bit.
Whenever I try, I get this nondescriptive error: 0x80070002 and Vista
claims it cannot find some file (But it doesn't say which one.)

Also trying to adjust 'automatic backup' results in the same error.
I cannot change anything in my backupsetting, I always get this error.
So I cannot start a backup by hand, nor run automatic backup.
This has been like this for months.
My system has a RAID1 SATA array.

I try to backup to an external USB drive (Lacie, formatted NTFS with
    enough diskspace).

Is Vista backup broken beyond repair on my machine?
    What can I do?

    Regards,
    Erwin Moller

    Erwin:

There's a post here that has a fix for this type of error. You can find
    it here:

    I hope this helps.

    Hi,

    Thanks for your response.

No, that is not the problem. I found that suggestion earlier, but it
    doesn't apply to my situation.
I have only 2 userprofiles, and both are active and alive-and-kicking.

I do see 3 other 'users' listed that I do not know by name, but they
look serious enough to leave in.
    Their Imagepaths point to:
    %systemroot%\system32\config\systemprofile
    %SystemRoot%\ServiceProfiles\LocalService
    %SystemRoot%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService

I think I should leave those.

    Any other suggestions?

    Regards,
    Erwin Moller

    EXACTLY the same problem here.

Does anyone know whether this will be corrected by SP1 (which I have
downloaded through Windows Update, but not yet installed) - or even whether
the problem might interfere with SP1 installation?

Following advice elsewhere, I have run scandisk which tells me that I have
some corrupt files that couldn't be fixed. I checked the CBS.log it
mentioned. but I don't know how to interpret the lengthy log.

Can anyone help me do so?

    SUCCESS!!!!
I'm very pleased to report that the second attempt to Repair Install Vista
from the Medion Recovery Disc worked fine AND I have now successfully run a
backup! For information, the second time, having finally managed to delete
(from the FileRepository in C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore) the newer nVidia
graphics drivers that always crash my PC, I ran it with UAC active, Windows
Features turned off along with Virus & Spyware protection. It took about 2
hours (without Windows Updates - I have that pleasure to come!), and so far,
everything except the Media Centre (and its remote control) seems to be
    working as expected.
Many thanks for your patience and help - it was good to feel that I had
someone interested in seeing me through!

Works perfectly...it's been 5 months since I was able to create a
    successful backup.
