Antivirus software for Windows Vista

I remember not long ago Avira was being recommended as a very good antivirus
program - I don't know whether that is still the case, and I am very happy
with ESET Smart Security. But if I were to be wanting a free AV I would try
    Avira from:
    http://www.avira.com/
where there is a link, at the top of their list, to the free version at:
    http://www.free-av.com/

Speed is not the most important factor
in determining which product is the best.
It's the AV software's ability to stop and
    detect.

It is installed on my machine and working to my satisfaction.
I hear they will withdraw support for the free Avast at the end of the year.
What is the best alternative? <H>.

Avira. I liked it so much, I decided to pop for the registered
version. The newest version also has real-time malware protection.

    http://www.softpedia.com/get/Antivirus/AntiVir-Personal-Edition.shtml

There IS a "nag screen" in the free version (trying to "nag" you into
upgrading) but it can be disabled - along with the startup screen.

As I said, NOD32. If you want a free one, Avira.

I parrot Ken's answer. I use Avast Free version with Vista 32 bit
Home Premium (as does my wife on her XP machine) and we have had
no trouble. As well Avast does score very high on AV tests year
after year. I also in the past purchased Nod 32 and it ran well
also. I switched to Avast after my Nod 32 license expired. I have
heard that Microsoft will offer a free AV sometime in 2009. I
expect if and when Avast Free is no longer supported I will switch
to the upcoming MS AV product. FYI the new Norton 2009 security
products (which I have also run) are very good on resource usage ,
detection etc. They are of course not free except for the trial
    versions.

Windows Live OneCare has become a very good firewall, anti-virus, antivirus,
    optimization software (etc)
    utility.

When checked against Symantec's (Norton) anti-virus, it is now at
least as good. Can be installed on three computers.
