Can someone suggest a good antivirus program for Windows Vista?

It is VERY important that the antivirus program does not consume a lot
of system resources and slow down the computer like Norton- or Norman
    Antivirus does.

I also did read the post below but did'nt get any clear suggestion here:

What's unclear about trying either AVG or Avast?

NOD32 at www.eset.com and you can try the full-version trial for 25 days.

  4. Why are you asking in a Windows XP newsgroup?

Norton 360 ver 3 or NIS 2009 versions have far
    better performance than previous versions.
    http://www.symantec.com orton360/about/index.jsp

You may want to consider downloading and testing
    the trial version of 360:

and if you like it check Frys.com (check rebate terms)
for how to buy a 3 PC version for under $15.00

  6. I've used the free version of AVG and Avast and found them both to be good
at their job. AVG does, however, have a much more user friendly interface.

As Planters has already suggested NOD32 is also a good all rounder. I'm
currently running Eset's Smart Security which includes NOD32 on my Windows 7
    system partition.

This is an excellent antivirus program that uses very little resources:

Do you know how Avast and Avg is compared to Eset regarding resource usage?

My experience is that Norton is really really sloooooooow from the
earlier versions. From that time I decided not to use Norton ever unless
it got alot less resource hungry. Soo I am not sure if I want to try
    Norton yet...

I'd happily recommend AVG Free for freeware, or NOD32 for pay-ware.

But AVG is a pig - Avast isn't.

AVG (Free) is a brilliant anti-virus program considering it is free.
Used it for five years in conjunction with SpyBotSD - no virus attacks
    succeeded.

Jane, I used AVG for years but recent versions on XP slowed things down
to a crawl and on Vista also slowed it down but of course it's a faster
machine so the slowdown was less obvious until I removed AVG.

Some people / machines seem okay with it, I certainly wasn't and if I'd
left it on this machine I'm using at work right now you'd probably get
    this next week :)

Sorry, I think they have tried to do too much with it and it shows. By
all means try it, the protection is good, but it's probably not going to
be the fastest or least noticeable.

You'll get different answers from different people, but here's my
    view:

    1. The best is NOD32 (which you have to pay for)

    2. If you want a free one, get Avast. It's not quite as good as NOD32,
    but still very good.
