I did exactly the following steps to get this error:

    Pre-requisites:
    1) Windows XP Pro (installed on Hard drive C)
    2) Two hard drives (C and D)

    Steps:
    1) Bootup computer with Vistax64 DVD
    2) Choose Install Now option
    3) Select C Drive
    4) Format C Drive
    5) Complete installation on C Drive
    6) Install drivers from Gigabyte CD for LAN, Sound, SATA drivers, etc
    7) Attempt to access hard drive D

Can't access hard drive D, even though it was never touched by anyone.
Everytime I double click I get the error message:

    "D:\ is not accessible.

The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable."

Note: The HDD is not dying, its brand new and was accessed literally an
hour ago without any problems. All my important documents are in there,
I need to recover them. I have an external HDD ready, but cannot access
    the drive!!!!

    HELP!

  2. You formatted C:\ but not D:\ drive?

I can only speculate but you may've not had this problem if you formatted
all drives, before your project started.

    Hi,

Using Disk Manager (diskmgmt.msc from the start/search line), assign a drive
letter to D:. You should then be able to access it, though there is a chance
you may also need to alter permissions or take ownership of the files with
    the current user account.

Well D: drive is a second hard drive, its physically seperate from C:. I
figured if Windows XP could read it, then so could Vista because they
were both NTFS. I used D: drive as my backup before upgrading from XP,
but it turned out that my backup is corrupt in Vista......

I did some googl'ing and think the following is similar to the problem
    I'm having:
    > It sounds like the filesystem is corrupt. A filesystem 'type' (such as
    > NTFS, which is what most Windows OSes use) tells the drive how to store
    > data, and present it to a user. Errors such as "corrupt master file
    > table" would lean me in that direction.

There's really only two ways of fixing this that I can think of, A)
Re-install XP or B) Run Linux off a CD to see if the drive is
accessible. But I wanted to wait incase there was an easier way!

Use TestDisk to analyze the partition/file system on the D: drive.

Hi andy, thanks for the link. Except I don't know what I'm doing with
this program. The instructions are usually one sentence long and don't
    explain much. :(
