I'm working on a Seagate Backup Plus 3 GB ext hard drive.

    Disk management shows
300 MB Healthy EFI System partition
    2794.10 GB Healthy Primary partition
    128 MB Unallocated

After removing from enclosure and connecting the actual internal drive via a SATA to USB adapter, Disk Management shows
a single 2794.52 GB unallocated and not initialized partition

If you add up the space of the three partitions when the drive is in its enclosure, they equal the space in the single partition when the drive is out of its enclosure. So the enclosure is doing something.

Can someone explain what's going on here?

Dougie, you are such a sleuth. I think you hit on something.

I don't like the fact that these enclosures are messing with the data. If the enclosure dies, you can't retrieve the data using standard interfaces.

I've avoided 3TB external drives because I need an XP computer to be able to "see" it.
I have three 2TB externals (all Western Digital) and the last one I purchased, when I try and boot Acronis from a CD, the Win 7/XP computer won't boot if it is attached. I made a note that I can't use it on one of the four computers I image about every 4 - 6 weeks.
That WD model is an Essential model where the other six external WD drives are My Passport. So there is something different about it.

I bought it because the price was great.
