With just 10 days left until Windows 10 begins its General Availability (GA) on 29 July 2015 the marketing push is about to crank up the volume.

Windows Insiders and those who follow tech news closely already know about GA for Windows 10 and so these final 10 days are a known quantity.

Everyday users may not have any idea that this operating system is about to hit the spotlight and that is who this marketing is directed at.

Microsoft has set a goal of getting over one billion users shifted to Windows 10 in the next 2-3 years. That is an ambitious goal and covers desktops, tablets, mobile and any other device that will be able to run Windows 10.

Their major push to get this update on as many system as possible is bolstered by offering it for free to users on Windows 7 and 8.1.

The roll out to those systems begins on 29 July but will be a steady and deliberate process so that Microsoft can monitor the progress. Initial availability will be to Windows Insiders and then trickle out to those who were able to make a reservation for Windows 10 through the Get Windows 10 app on their windows 7 and 8.1 systems.

Once Microsoft is happy with that part of the upgrade push they will open up the pipes to other users who might not have been able to reserve an initial copy.

Just for clarity - reservation or not - all properly licensed Windows 7 and 8.1 devices will still get the free upgrade in due time.

Today Microsoft has published the first commercial spot in their marketing push and this is all about taking the familiar and best of Windows 7 and 8.1 and bringing them together in Windows 10.

Good luck to Microsoft as so far Windows Vista still has more users than Windows 8 and 8.1. I am hoping this is as big a flop as 8 is because we really need a major movement to help prevent Microsoft's suicidal approach to Windows after Windows 10, mainly a yearly subscription based Windows.\

I recently asked many online retailers for numbers on the sales of Office 365 vs Office 2013 from Microsoft and cannot get any answers as of yet. I do know I haven't a single customer out of approximately 500 or so clients who has Office 365.

I had one but when she found out what she bought, she returned it unopened keeping my poll of Office 365 users in house quite pristine!

I have to go see where that survey came from, I didn't think it made sense when I saw it.
As for subscription based no I am not saying that Pete I am saying the next version of Windows after 10 will be subscription bases ala Office 365 vs Office 2013 where 2013 they have stated is the last version of office for sale in that manner.

When you consider most if not all paid for antivirus and antimalware software is and has been subscription based for either a long time or from day one, add to that more and more general software companies are also going subscription based, two I know about are Adobe's full Photoshop, and the video editor Lightworks which has been subscription based for a long time.
I think Microsoft are seeing subscription at some time in the future being the only real business plan they can afford.

I just don't see people understanding that as the average user would never subscribe to any software.

    I agree, Rich.

It's difficult enough getting most of my customer's to even renew their antivirus software.

You got that right. That was one of the reasons I started using free ones because as little as I think about any Antivirus, at least they would have something on their pc that offered some protection. With Emsisoft I do the renewals so January starts my first real test will show up as I have sold about 100 licenses all this year and I am curious how many will contact me for renewals. I may go after them when they don't. Mbam isn't doing much of a job as I sold maybe 6 of them before yearly before going to Emsisoft and Mbam didn't even wake up until June to try to get renewals and their links they are sending don't work as no one seems to be able to use them, so I am just converting them to Emsisoft one by one now.
