When I am playing a small video in face book - -or playing the episode of a program, the video stops suddenly and won't move - sometimes it will eventually start up again and sometimes not. What is the cause of this please?

I am using Windows 7 and Google Chrome

Hi Judy, my first thought is your internet connection speed, if slow the video will stop while the downloading data catches up, or as we call it, "Buffering up"
Do you know what speeds you are supposed to be getting from your ISP, and have you done a recent speed check?
Click on this link and run a speed test, let us know what the result is please.

Just click on the "Begin Test", do not click anything else as it will be an advert of some sort leading you on to a different website. Just ignore those.

I am sorry to say there is your answer, that speed is a lot too slow for most modern high definition or even moderate definition video.
Until I changed my ISP to a faster service I was averaging around 8 to 10 mps and I was seeing video stop and start. I am now on a service providing up to 45mps and all is now OK for me.
Who is your ISP and what speeds do they say the service should be? Is there any possibility of an increase in speed either from them or from a different ISP?

I have 25 meg service and some (not all) videos on Facebook do the exact same thing as you're experiencing. I have a fast PC and fast Internet so it has to be on Facebook's end.

I think it's on Facebook's end as well. The same thing happens to me sometimes and I have 156.08 mbp's download and 12.12 mbp's upload.

Thank you all for your responses. I live in an independent Retirement Village, and our emails come in through the Village. They go out through Telstrabusiness. (Recently changed from Internode). I have to tell you that we have a lot more people living here than last year even - the place is growing fast, but technology isn't.

I know one of the residents was complaining recently (but I think he downloads something like an opera show) and I know that would slow everyone down. I'll have to talk to the manager and see what he can do.

It is not only facebook. Occasionally I will watch a TV show episode that I've missed, and it stops midway.

If the whole retirement village shares one Internet connection then that would explain for the slow downs.

Your welcome. Explain that every PC sharing that connection is taking a chunk of the overall bandwidth which will slow down each time another units PC is connected to it.
